    Skinny vegetarians

This might sound a little bit crazy,
But every vegetarian I know (I actually don't know any vegan) is pretty skinny.
    Including myself.

How is that in your case?

STRESSED is nothing more than DESSERTS spelled backwards.

I've known some tubby vegetarians but I've only heard rumors of tubby vegans.

  • Most Precious Blood is a vegan hardcore band. They're not necessarily tubby, but they're not skinny. http://www.trustkill.com/images_dynamic/glossies/8.jpg

I personally am quite skinny, and the one or two other vegans I know are also skinny. Vegetarians on the other hand, I know a couple who are large, not necessarily fat or tubby though

I think it's definitely a lot easier to become overweight as a vegetarian, if you do it wrong. I know quite a few who become one and eat all carbs, just all bread and sugary foods, and hardly any fruits and vegetables. I'm sure it's possible as a vegan as well, but seeing as I've never met one who is overweight, I can't say for sure.

I've been vegetarian for four years and I'm pretty chubby :p
But that's because of my genes, though.
It's actually quite judgemental to think that most vegetarians are skinny.

  • Yup, seems every Vegeterian I know is skinny, except me. :D

  • I was skinny before I was vegan.

Really? -I always thought, and also heard from a few, that Vegans cannot gain real weight?

    Depends on your diet...

I'm a vegetarian and I'm overweight, in part because of my type I diabetes messing with my metabolism, in part because I'm a grad student who doesn't get enough exercise due to my large work load, in part because I love carbohydrates. It's entirely possible to gain lots of weight as a vegetarian or vegan. Lacto-ovo vegetarians tend to eat a lot of starch and cheese because sometimes that's what's most convenient to prepare or to eat when dining out. I know a couple of vegans who are larger... I think that a sedentary lifestyle can hit them as hard as anyone else. Some vegans I know eat loads of junk food (Rice Dream, Twizzlers, Newman's O's, and veg egg rolls, anyone?). I also had a vegan friend who became obsessed with deep frying foods in a FryDaddy. Soy scallops, fried veggie dumplings, and home fries, though cruelty-free, are hardly the epitome of health food. Obviously cutting out meat isn't enough to make you skinny... you have to eat a balanced diet, lots of fruits and veggies, reasonable portions, tempered with regular physical activity, to be health regardless of what your diet is.

I've actually put on weight after becoming vegetarian. Well, actually I've put on weight since moving back in with my parents about 3 months ago (oh dear lord there is food EVERYWHERE, I can snack again), but I've always been skinny. At the moment I weigh around 62 kilos, up from 55 when I ate meat. (FYI I'm 6').

When I first became a vegetarian I gained about 10 pounds but I wasnt eating very healthily back then. I eventually lost that 10 pounds and have maintained a pretty normal body weight since then. I switched to vegan a few weeks ago and haven't noticed a weight change yet-but it's early.

What is anything if not something else?
  • all vegans I've met, skinny, but I've met non-skinny vegetarians

You won't be skinny if you work out a lot.

  • It depends on energy input and output. It's possible to become overweight on healthy food... if you eat loads and don't exercise.
I think if you're vegan there is a less chance you'll get more overweight compared to those who aren't.... only because you have to eat a lot more of the food to have more input then output. Hope you understand :D

I've been carb binging too! Mainly to get my weight up a bit before getting my wisdom teeth out, so my weight doesn't get too low. Haven't put any weight on though. :/

I was fat when I ate meat and i'm still fat as a vegetarian.

I'm vegan and I'm not skinny at all, in the last five or six months I gained a lot of weight due to my super cool diet of pasta, bread and rice. >.>

The next months I will eat more soy, tofu and these things with more protein and try to consume less carb..

    :-)

    I'm vegetarian and a proud fatty. :-)

  • I could definitely lose some weight right about now. And I will! *resolved face* ><
    (oh and I'm vegan)

I think it's possibly to be overweight and vegetarian/vegan - we can still have alcohol, nuts have lots of fat in, we can still have sugar, etc.
