What is your favorite Ska band?

  • What is your favorite Ska band?

Sure, this is a Punk group, but after the last topic "what's the best punk band nowadays" I thought it would be appropriate to ask what Ska bands everyone is into, and if you dont like Ska, give a couple reasons why. Thanks.

Here are mine: The Pietasters, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, and River City Rebels

I really love the standards: The Specials, English Beat, Selecter, etc. But I also really love their Jamaican forefathers like The Jolly Boys. Great stuff. Mephiskaphales' original demo tape was AMAZING, however the studio album that it spawned had all of the juice produced out of it. Total crap, but man do I love that demo tape. For some great driving music pick up the two Intensified: Original Ska albums. Absolute must-haves.

    brief ska-history

Ska is a type of jamaican music that originated in the middle of the last century. It is the roots of reggae. It came back in two waves after the first. The second being primarily british, with bands like the specials, bad manners, and the selecter. Later, in the 80s and 90s a third wave of ska came about, primarily ska-punk and ska-core or just faster, more upbeat ska music. Familiar bands include the toasters, bim skala bim, mighty mighty bosstones, mustard plug. The essential of ska is an emphasis on the upbeat or upstroke and often includes a horn section.

"whiney punk bands" seem to be your favorite kind of music considering I see sum 41, fall out boy, and jimmy eat world in your profile. Did you think that was ska music?

If anyone denys that Streetlight Manifesto is the best Ska band playing music right now, you deserve death, but that doesn't count out other bands. Catch 22 (What came before Streetlight Manifesto) is good, but not as good. Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (an all acoustic Ska band, with members of SLM) also deserves a mention.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Pietasters, The Toasters, and Mustard Plug are also very talented groups and really high on my favorites list.

Choking Victim/Leftover Crack are probably straight up without a doubt the best Skacore band ever, but the Suicide Machines and Capdown get honorable mentions for rocking almost as well.

No need to really talk about Operation Ivy, time and record sales have said enough about them, as well as the projects that spawned from it (Rancid and Common Rider)

    I type too much. :(

    Punks don't care anymore, whatever.

I enjoy most of the early Ska from the 50's

    English Beat, Specials, Operation Ivy.

If you are curious about early Ska there is a great 2 disc compilation of Ska songs called "Ska Bonanza"

Just a link so you can see what is on the album and listen to a few songs if you are curious. I do not support ordering from said institution in the link.

  • Reel Big Fish, Catch-22, Streetlight Manifesto, Voo doo Glow Skulls, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
