LASTFM VS PING...

Ping sucks, and here's why:

It's a walled community for artists. Currently there are only a handful of artists to follow, and it will only ever support popular artists with tracks available on iTunes.
Apple has never done much to support young, up-and-coming artists. LastFM on the other hand, is a great place for unsigned artists to get exposure. Likewise, LastFM is perfect for discovering new musical talent.

It bloats iTunes to Microsoftian levels. Most people want a media player simply to play mp3s and organise their music.
Ping could have been good if it was small and useful, but it's big, slow, and lacks genuinely useful features.

Censorship in comments. Fuck you Apple, or should I say **** you Apple? Actually, I should say.. grow up Apple. This is the internet, not The Brady Bunch.

Ping is a pain to set up, and a pain to turn off. LastFM is easy to set up, easy to use, and easy to turn off.

The social aspects are terrible. It's difficult to find friends with similar taste.

Ping is intrusive. It bombards you with advertising, and requires your real name rather than an alias. If you use an alias, it changes the billing name on your itunes account.
PING IS MUCH MORE FOCUSSED ON COMMERCE THAN ON SOCIAL INTERACTION

LastFM is more useful, easier to use, and less intrusive.

Initially, Ping looked useless, but I thought I'd give it some time. Today, when Ping recommended I follow JLS, that was the final straw.
