• Can We Start a Petition...

To send to last.fm that requests they ban/automatically ignore and/or remove tags from artists such as "seen live" and all these other nonsensical bullshit tags?

    I'll do it, I swear.

I just need help compiling a list of ignorant useless tags to be banned.

We could also add to the petition a request for users to be able to suggest tags that should be banned/vote to ban tags per artist specifically. Such as say you run across a metalcore band and they are tagged as "black metal." Users could vote on that band's tag page to ban "black metal" from said band. After so many votes, the tag ban would go in affect on that particular artist.

  • In this post I will compile the list of all the suggested tag bans. If you don't think a particular tag ban should exist, please say so and why. Also, if I list variants of a particular word or phrase, feel freed to add to the variants list.

    Proposed Tag Ban List
    - Country tags (Germany, Sweden)
    - Language tags (Norwegian, African)* EXCEPTION: when is used in a tag specifying something importantly specific, example - American folk, Irish folk
    - Seen live
    - Own this (variants: own, in collection, i own this, album i own)
    - Disco metal (seriously, who has ever actually heard ANYTHING that could be called disco metal?)
    - War metal (this is anything black/thrash or black/death/thrash with war lyrics, however it's not a new genre, there is no difference between supposed "war metal" bands and black/thrash, black/death, black/death/thrash bands)
    - Sucks (variants: sux, this sucks, this {any forms here}, suks, suckz, sukz, shitty, shit, bullshit, bullshit, garbage; see also gay; see also bitch; also any variant {genre})
    - Soundtrack (variants: OST; I personally am not sure about this one)
    - Tagging band with its own name or band members names
    - Favourites (variants: favorites, awesome, good, great, good band, excellent)
    - Gay (variants: gay {genre}, lesbian, lesbian {genre}, homo, homo {genre})
    - Bitch (variants: bitch {genre}, whore, whore {genre})
    - Blacker than the blackest black times infinity
    - I'm cool (variants: I'm gay, I suck)

    - on repeat
    - look this up later

Great idea! I especially like the way you took care of the language tags. And the voting for "stupid tags" sounds good too.

    Another tags I'd ban:
    -soundtrack
-tagging band with its own name or band members names
    -Favourites

They could also limit the length of tags to prevent this:

Sorry dude, but for example many people complained about Rick Astley playing on the death metal radio. Thats caused by stupid tags. Whats so funny about tagging disco artists with "brutal death metal"?

This isn't fascism, we're trying to prevent annoyances like what was mentioned above.

Besides, you have nothing to worry about if you're not making ignorant tags, did you even look at the tags suggested for banning? The majority of them have absolutely nothing to do with music or would in any way describe the band/album that was being tagged.

People can't govern themselves - that is why they need to be governed by a person who isn't a moron like the general population is. This is obvious with any open format. I mean look at Wikipedia and how much gets fucked up there.

This is why we need laws - to keep honest people honest and destroy those who want to fuck everything up for everyone else. That's not fascist or totalitarian in anyway.

And there is people who are anarchists. HA HA HA HA HA! It would never work.

I agree with this statement. And as much as I love this group, I love freedom even more.

It's not a lack of freedom we're proposing.

The incorrect tagging is causing problems on last.fm - you know what they say about freedom don't you? "Your freedom ends where another's begins."

For example, you have the freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean you can yell FIRE in a crowded theater when there isn't one.

If you'll look at the proposed banned tags, as I have said before, they are all problematic, non descriptive of the band or music, highly opinionated, useless, and TROLLING.

None of the propositions so far are unreasonable or would impede on any freedom.

I'd very much appreciate it if yous would knock off the moronic hippie-wop crap and actually look at what we're proposing before you mouth off about how it's fascism.

    You're right.
And people will still have their group forums or shoutboxes where they can make fun of artists or complaine about what sucks and it won't bother anyone else. (like it did in Rick Astleys case mentioned before)
Another thing: imagine that you want to find something on google, for example pictures of hot ladies ;) and the only thing you find is Lisa Minelli... just because someone thought it is funny.

EDIT: and another thing: what's fascist about voting for tags which should be banned? It could work the same way as voting for pictures.

That's what gave me the idea in the first place.

I don't remember what a tag is? RACE TO SEE WHO CAN GET MOST ANAAL NATHRAKH PLAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I found a whole new host of tags to add to the list. Apparently there is a group of kids going around tagging things they like with {user name} power/love/loves/etc

    Here is a perfect example:
    http://www.last.fm/music/Enochian+Crescent/+tags

We should also compile a list of users that should be banned for such abuse and also a list of pages with severe tag abuse to be reported.

    Modifié par anathematized_1 le 9 nov. 2009, 15h50m
  • Also, I think we should actively report for user to be banned that do shit like this.

HarukaEX is one of these users.

I don't know how to report somebody to be banned though, so if anybody can tell me, or something, let's get on this shit.

  • I added to the list above users who abuse the system and pages with severe tag abuse. If you run across any, let me know so I can add them to the list.

  • indie for the jonas brothers is a shitty tag

After so many votes, the tag ban would go in affect on that particular artist. But there are artists that change their style during career and there is a threat that fans of one period would ban other period's tag. For example, look at this band Sonata Arctica... They made four very succesfull power metal albums. In fifth they became a little more progressive and in sixth they definitely turned into prog metal. I bet that power metal fans would ban absolutely correct "progressive metal" tag.

Proposed Tag Ban ListI disagree with some of these.

    - Country tags (Germany, Sweden)There are people who enjoy music from certain country, no matter what genre it is. It may be since they like that country's language or they have roots there...

    - Language tags (Norwegian, African)* EXCEPTION: when is used in a tag specifying something importantly specific, example - American folk, Irish folkAs above...

    - Disco metal (seriously, who has ever actually heard ANYTHING that could be called disco metal?)I haven't, but I don't presume that it doesn't exist at all. Who would imagine symphonic metal 40 years ago? Such a term would seem to be a total absurd, just like disco metal sounds silly for us.

    - War metal (this is anything black/thrash or black/death/thrash with war lyrics, however it's not a new genre, there is no difference between supposed "war metal" bands and black/thrash, black/death, black/death/thrash bands)There are people who are very interested in war theme and war-connected lyrics are more imprtant for them than a genre.

    - Soundtrack (variants: OST; I personally am not sure about this one)Just like above. Imagine movies or computer games maniacs who love to listen to sountracks of movies they watched or games they played.

    What about cities like:

  • I like country tags, or at least tags that specify the genre while mentioning the country (ex. Peruvian punk, Swedish metal, Japanese hardcore, etc.). Same goes for any kind of regional tags, as they are useful in terms of identifying a regional scene (ex. NYHC and so forth)

As for disco metal, the band Paranoia Dance Party! execute a fusion of metalcore, ska and disco music that could be construed by some as 'disco metal' though I prefer the term 'skacore'

  • Have you thought that people who put their usernames in tags may be subscribers who create their own tag radios for their own use? Just sayin' coz it needs consideration.
