started in the 60’s through Black Sabbath
as it is commonly known, it also known and respected that in the early tracks of Black Sabbath that Doom Metal
was hinted at. Doom Metal is traditionally derived stylistically in blues but with added ‘thicker’ sounds like the tritone from the guitars and double kick drums featured. The lyrics add a darker feel to the music imagining pain, suffering, loneliness and so fourth. However, it was not coined until the late 70’s and early 80’s when Pentagram
and was massively innovative in the making of the scene as it is today.
But in the 70’s bands less associated with heavy metal and more with ‘heavy rock’ (as I would call it) would come to be the foundations of this genre and forthcoming sub genres. These are bands like Budgie
and Blue Cheer
whom paved the way for a whole wave of thicker, heavier sounding music.
The wave through the 70’s produced the early 80’s ‘first wave’ as many historians of Heavy Metal have stated. These artists are considered as Witchfinder General
, Saint Vitus
. Each of these are said to have ‘created’ the now well known sub-genres of the genre.
Witchfinder General’s Death Penalty
, Trouble’s Psalm 9
and Black Sabbath’s Black Sabbath
are the centre of what is called Traditional Doom Metal
and is closely tied with Heavy Metal the most. The trademark clean and high vocals over a thick crisp sound expressing dark lyrics are the usual elements of these above artists music.
Later, in the mid-80’s it is considered that Pentagram’s Pentagram
(Now known as Relentless
) and Saint Vitus’s self titled album
are known to lay the foundations for the sub-genre known as Funeral Doom Metal
with a more slower, slumber take on the traditional form adding death growls and screams to the mix of distorted guitars and heavy riffs.
This was followed on by the Swedish giants Candlemass and their release Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
, which sworded the line between Epic Doom Metal
and traditional. It’s attributes including operatic and dramatic vocals, loud and furious music with an optional fantasy tone buried beneath.
The last of the notable sub-genres and the most recently derived was Drone Doom
, essentially very slow, heavily distorted and experimental based doom. This is often characterised and known to be artists like Sunn O)))
as the originators of this sub-genre.Fusion Genres
Doom Metal, as in all genres of Heavy Metal, has fused together with other genres to create some other different sounds.
