  • BRITNEY SPEARS - CIRCUS REVIEW

    17 nov. 2008, 23h17m par Fleseastorm

The new album Circus by Britney Spears was a source of excitement for a lot of people. After the amazing Blackout I thought she would work with the same producers, (which she did), and cut another amazing album, (which she didn’t). The album is full of snappy bubblegum pop songs and Euro trash beats. The album reminds me of Oops I Did It Again if Vengaboys had done it. Another problem I had with the album is the fact that during many dance songs, the mood shifts into ballad territory. If I were at a club dancing to the song the mood change would probably make me stop dancing. The actual ballads are also very bad. Britney can’t handle slow songs. Her voice is far too thin.

One major issue with the album is the fact that it is not genre bending like her last record was. Blackout was a record that transcended taste levels. I found all my Britney/pop hating friends openly admitting to loving that record. Circus is not that way. It is a straight up bubble gum pop record aimed only at a select group of listeners. It might do what it does well, but what it does do is extremely limited. Everyone one of those pop/Britney hating people I know who loved Blackout hate this record as it is the type of music they have always hated her for.

1.Womanizer – Awful. Her worst single ever. The beat is nothing but alarm sounds and clicks. Her voice is annoying and squawky. The lyrics are idiotic. It’s an all around horrible song. One of her worst songs for sure. But I will say it sets the mood for a collection of Euro Trash confections that are about to follow.

    2. Circus – Basic filler. Its okay but nothing really interesting. A bit bland. Has potential but it constantly turns ballad-like in the middle.

    3. Out from Under – Not nearly as good as the original. Britney’s thin voice zaps all emotion out of this ballad. Britney should NOT make ballads. The beat was also changed and now it sounds very 1999.

    4. Kill the Lights – Another filler track. But It is one of the better tracks. Good enough to be sing-songy, but not good enough to be memorable. It would probably have to be one of the albums stand out tracks though.

    5. Shattered Glass – Dancey. Probably leans to being one of the better songs on the CD. That said it’s nothing amazing. Very tame and extremely bubble gum. The chorus sounds very Euro Trash. It also suffers from ballad-like interludes and the run time of the song is questionable.

    6. If U Seek Amy – The best song. The hook is strong and the beat is catchy. The gimmick is also amusing. Probably my favorite song.

    7. Unusual You – Super boring. It’s basically an electro ballad. Puts you to sleep.

    8. Blur – A super boring nothing song. Slow and dull. Lifeless. One of the worst songs.

    9. Mmm Papi – Horrific. The beat is like something out of Austin Powers meets Aqua. The lyrics are horrible. The song is cringe worthy.

    10. Mannequin – One of the best songs. It’s quick and dancey. I like it a lot. The demo was better, but I can’t really take points away for that as nobody was supposed to hear the demo.

    11. Lace and Leather – Not impressive. The song sounds like bad late 80’s R&B. Very Prince knock off. I’ve heard so many better Prince knock offs. Sounds like a Futuresex-Lovesounds lost track. That’s not a good thing.

    12. My Baby – Worst song. Super boring. Why is this on the CD? To make people say “aww she loves her kids.” Super pretentious.

    13. Rock Me In – Why on earth did she decide to make a Shut Up and Drive knock off? That song was horrible! So is this one. It does have a little bit of a Euro Trash quality to it as well. It does have a much better hook than Rihanna’s song though.

    14. Phonography – Sounds super Euro Trash. Very Vengaboys. It’s almost funny. The song is about phone sex, a topic she’s done before. It’s such a silly trashy song. I sort of can’t believe she would record a song like this.

    15. Amnesia – A tiny bit 80’s sounding. A bit middle of the road. It’s not horrible but not fantastic. Filler. It beat is hot but the hook isn’t.

    16. Radar – It’s sad that this is the absolute BEST song. It has an ity bity remixed quality. But it’s almost impossible to tell what was changed. It is a classic though.

    17. Trouble – Decent. In this group of tracks it stands out. The song is nothing amazing but it is good enough to spin once in a while.

    18. Quicksand – A boring song. A typical mid tempo piano ballad. Nothing special

    19. Rock Boy – A demo. It was never put on the album, but it was from the Circus sessions. I wont the track into account when giving my final grade. It pretty much stinks though.

FINAL SAY: D+ her worst effort of her career. Very few songs worth listening too. It is far to bubblegum. At best it is just good enough to keep you interested until her next project. If it was released 5 years ago I would have loved it, but alas I am no longer 12 years old.
  • Pop Music fall/winter 2008

    19 sept. 2008, 1h11m par Fleseastorm

This fall/winter there are going to be a lot of rivalries going on. I expect to go on the pages of last.fm artist and read nothing but haters and diehard fans having it out. Pop music is exploding at the moment. I can’t help but be excited. Being the type of person that I am, one that gives credit where I feel it is due, should have a fun time reading the silly reviews from the music fans out there. Tons of crazy fans that will like their favorite artist’s song even if it’s bad, and hate their rival’s even it is stunning.

So far the biggest one has to be Britney Spears vs. Chrstina Aguilera battle. (Tho I don't really beleive its a huge battle since their music styles are not alike anymore.) Both have new singles out soon. Womanizer by Britney will be leaked in a matter of days, or even hours, while Keeps Gettin' Better is already a fan favorite.

Girls Aloud vs. Sugababes is underway already as well. The UK's biggest girl groups are going against each other in singles. The Promise by Girls Aoud just got leaked, and Girls by Sugababes is also out.

Finally on a flop status battle scale, Hilary Duff vs. Lindsay Lohan are supposed to release singles soon. Hilary Duff has Reach Out and Lindsay Lohan has Playground.

Among the others releasing music in 2008 are:
    The Pussycat Dolls
    Monrose
    The Saturdays
    Ciara
    Pink or P!nk
    Anthony Callea
    Wonder Girls
    Beyonce
    Boa
    Crystal Kay

What I've learned from my top 10:
I need to find a way to get PCD and Beyonce off that list asap. =_=

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Turn It Up. I remember when it 1st got leaked. I honestly could not believe my ears.

What is your favorite album of 2?
    Dignity

What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
“If you tell me one more time how I should live I swear I’ll bite your head off!” from Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)

How many times have you seen 4 live?
    None.

What is your favorite song by 7?
Show Me What You Got (I honestly can’t believe PCD is in my top 10 =_=)

What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10?
Anthany Callea? Umm...Finding out that there was a gay artist out there who actually didn’t have horrible music...? lol

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
By Kylie Minogue...? lol u gotta be joking...does she have any sad songs? lol

What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
There are TONS. But my favorite has to be:
“You made me feel I wasn't enough, wasn't enough for your love,
But it was insecurity that made you run It wasn't me.” from Play With Fire

What is your favorite song by 9?
Beyonce is in my top 10? Wtf...lol. Umm...probably Crazy in Love.

How did you get into 3?
Well I was a really mild fan in the Fever days. I became a huge fan in the Body Language days. That was a great record.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
    Baby One More Time... lol

What is your favorite song by 4?
Over It. It’s one of my anthems.

How many time have you seen 9 live?
    Once.

What is a good memory you have involving 2?
A good memory? Umm...Dignity is my anger record so thats not exactly good...maybe skipping school and taking the train to go buy Metamorphosis and then walking in the rain to my driver’s ed class while listening to Come Clean.

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
WTF is with these Minogue sisters and this sad question. They don’t make sad music. Pick a different artist!

What is your favorite album of 5?
Well...I Am Me. But if the new record is as good as Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya) then it’ll be the new CD.

What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
I’ve never liked Kylie’s lyrics. I only like angry lyrics and hers are so happy. So none.

What is your favorite song of 1?
Hand one. Gimme More is dark and sexy. Lonely is angry. Freakshow is super catchy. Slave 4 U is just plain amazing. Honestly I don’t know.

What is your favorite song of 10?
    If Only. Great song

How many times have you seen 8 live?
    Zero

What is your favorite album of 1?
Blackout. No Ballads! Lol. Then the Britney record is 2nd place.

What is a great memory you have considering 9?
Great Beyonce memories? Yeah right....that’s not a funny joke.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
    I Begin to Wonder

What is your favorite cover by 2?
Like cover song...or album cover? Hilary doesn’t have the greatest album covers. But I guess the Dignity cover.

  • "Baby Love" shows Nicole is for real, but...

    26 sept. 2007, 15h35m par empoor

You don't have to be a genius to figure out that Nicole Scherzinger is heading for success with her upcoming solo album, "Her Name Is Nicole". Even though killer-ass songs like "Winning Women (feat. Rihanna)" and "Steam" aren't going to be on the album (shame on you, Nicole), the first two singles show that the album will still rock.

"Whatever U Like (feat. T.I.)" was a nice song. A departure from her strong feminine message in the duet with Rihanna, but still, I'm not complaining about the direction the single takes. The video was nice, but reminded me a little too much of "Ring the Alarm", which had a good video, but the creative-twist-style just didn't suit "Whatever U Like".

Now, "Baby Love" has arrived, featuring a very limited rap by will.i.am. I love this song, it is so simple and shows me that Nicole can do more than just sexy songs about lust and what-not. It's sweet, adorable and loveable. The video? Most people seem to hate it, but why they do, I just don't understand. For once Nicole has produced a simple, sweet music video, without all the pointless dancing and the endless amount of production. It's a perfect fit with the song, because it embodies the same principles the song embodies.

But. Nicole, sweety. You don't have to copy Rihanna, okay? The ella-part of "Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z)" wasn't what made it a success, okay? It actually was the worst part of the whole song (which was brilliant, most of the time) and everytime I hear it, I get the urge to kill somebody. Please, why the la-la-la-laaaa in the song? If you couldn't remember the lyrics, you could have re-recorded it when you did remember. Please, it sounds stupid.

    Never do that again, okay?
