Newgazer bands

  • The High Violets are perhaps better than any other Newgaze band mentioned in this discussion thread, and they are without question Newgaze. While they exhibit influence of first generation bands like MBV, Ride, Slowdive and even reach back to the Cocteau Twins, they make the sound their own, and are experts are train beats...at least as good as Ride was.

I'll put Kaitlyn Ni Donovan's voice up against any woman's who's ever sung shoegaze/newgaze. She's as good, and there's more power hinted at in her voice than the others.

    The layered guitars? Oh MY!

Not only does their music qualify as the Neo-Psychedelic that all good shoegaze/newgaze does, they reach even further to achieve Head Music...

For the uninitiated, I'd try the 2006 album To Where You Are which is where they truly come into their own. Their first album, 44 Down, is much more Old School Shoegaze...and of course, there's the excellent Satellite Remixes which is a trippy alternative.

no question that Kaitlyn's vocals are quite awesome earwax...I had the pleasure of seeing them in Philadelphia a few years ago and it was definitely one of the best shows I've seen and they're very cool peeps also....I still prefer 44 Down however, Julia and the title track are def in my alltime favorite top 50 or so....cheers! =)

The Legends. Not precisely "newgaze" if you define as current shoegazer bands, but quite related and a must to hear for anyone who likes the J&MC fuzzed-out guitar pop sound that influenced the shoegazers.

Try their debut: Up Against The Legends

What the fuck is newgaze? clons of Slowdive, The Jesus And the Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins? Most of the bands you mentioned guys are simply pathetic. What`s the point of listening to the bands that have not discovered anything original and will always exist in the overwhelming shadow of their masters?

braxinski..with the logic you're using, one could well say that everyone should've stoppped listening to rock after the Beatles and Stones.....I beg to differ Sir....No one loves classic Gaze more than myself, however there's been some incredible new Gaze and Gaze influenced music being turned out over the past 10 years or so.....

a few posts back, a couple of guys said:
'What`s the point of listening to the bands that have not discovered anything original...'

Sorry, I have to disagree with you. There is a derivative element to music, and being influenced by past artists, or 'originals' is nothing new (take the media darlings Vampire Weekend for instance -It would be easy to dismiss them as ripping off what Paul Simon was doing 20 years ago, etc.). Many of these artists are building their sound from similar foundations... but to write them off collectively is insulting. Many carry the music into new territories and directions, and in some cases, improve upon what might have been done originally.
The original group of musicians that were labeled as 'shoegaze' or 'shoegazing' were done so in a derogatory kind of way by the British press, and were also written off collectively or overshadowed by other styles emerging in the UK.

It was only a matter of time that the next generation was going to start discovering those gems... soaking them in, and building off them. I, as one who was a 'shoegazer' when that music came out originally, am delighted that the music lives on... and is going places.
Do yourself a favor, and don't make the mistake of mass-dismissal - OK.

    Bands:
    Kyte
    Amberhaze
    Native Lights
and last but not least... Starflyer 59. They have been making incredible music for over 15 years. Kind of picked up where the originals left off, and never stopped...

I think you're begging the following question...How stupid are YOU to join a Newgaze group?

    (By the way, it's spelled C L O N E — not clon.)
