Neon Genesis Evangelion, otherwise known as "Shin Seiki Evangelion," is a popular anime series written in 1995 by chief director Hideaki Anno of GAINAX. It is fifteen years after the "Second Impact," involving an accident with the first angel, Adam and the melting of Antarctica. It revolves around a group of 14-year olds who are forced to pilot the Evas, robots that seem to have a mind of their own, to destroy the Angels, mysterious creatures that attack Tokyo-3. Its main character is Shinji Ikari, who is constantly in a state of emotional angst. Separating itself from typical mecha, NGE has a very thoughtful storyline and deep characters.

First anime series I ever watched front-to-back, (creeiply) coincidentally enough when I was 14. Got me into anime, to say the least. So I like it, even if I must admit now it does have problems (dodgy writing at times, bad comedy). Strong nostalgia factor, I guess.
