Their most popular album seems to be "The Wedding" (2005).

It's the only one I've got and I'm quite fond of it.

Hehehehe, this one's to make Cylob happy. Could you describe the sound of Clan of Xymox, and what's the best album to start with for Curve?

Haha. :) Mixed feelings really, I wrote pages on Curve and now have to start all over!

First off, they make a good pair of bands.

I'll tackle Clan of Xymox (for now)...

    Clan of Xymox

    Post-Punk Era, 1985-1986:

Clan of Xymox started out as a gothic post-punk band on 4AD, but they stood out from the crowd immediately by using neworderish sounds. The track "Stranger" for instance is the closest I've come yet to "Blue Monday". Although a gothic band this is not miserable music, there are melodies galore that make your ears stand up. Both albums of this era are essentials...

    Clan of Xymox (1985)

Highlights: Stranger, Stumble and Fall, Muscoviet Musquito

    Medusa (1986)

    Highlights: Michelle, Louise, Blind Hearts

    Madchester Era, 1989-1992:

This is where "Clan of Xymox" became simply "Xymox". The music is far less goth and much more like your average Manchester band (bizarre but true). I'll recommend just one album here, which sounds more like The Farm than New Order.

    Metamorphosis (1992)

Just try "Dream On", one of the most infectious tracks you'll ever hear.

    Gothic Rock Era, 1997-2001:

Just when people thought the game was over, "Clan of Xymox" returned with some stunning goth rock. I personally think the next 3 albums have no equals in this genre. The guitars are up front (bad and beautiful), the melodies flow like water from a tap, the lyrics reach deep into your psyche and the vocal delivery is sublime. I recommmend all albums from this era...

    Hidden Faces (1997)

Highlights: Out of the Rain, It's a Lie, Hypocrite

    Creatures (1999)

Highlights: Jasmine and Rose, Doubts, Consolation

Incidentally, I named my daughter Jasmine Rose, who'll soon be 2. :)

    Notes from the Underground (2001)

Highlights: I Want You Now, Internal Darkness, The Bitter Sweet

    EBM Era, 2003 Present:

Once again, the band changed direction and became a full-on EBM outfit. After 18 years you'd think "surely not", but this is a supreme success. The following is one of the best EBM albums out there...

    Farewell (2003)

Highlights: One More Time, Losing My Head, Cold Damp Day

Fortunately, "Farewell" didn't mean the end of the band.

Get any of the above albums, you won't be disappointed.

  • Got 'The Holy Bible' a few days ago, and it blew my fucking mind! Can't stop listening to it.

Now, I've been made aware that the Manics have changed styles over the years... but I'm really into the TBH style, so what album should I get next?

    The Holy Bible's most like.....

    Gold Against the Soul (1993)

... which was released the year before. Come 1996 their sound was more calculated and commercial, they'd given up some of that rebelliousness.

Personally, I'd go for their debut, which is all guns blazing and a stunner:

    Generation Terrorists (1992)

    Highly recommended. :)

Secret Snacker & Accomplished Pen Thief At:
  • I've been recommended that debut too. I think I'll go for that one. I'm not sure how I'd like to get the britpop MSP though...

    Anyway, thanks! :)

Some of their "Britpop Era" albums are good (Everything Must Go is quite consistent), but "Generation Terrorists" has the mean streak and mission they started out with.

    You won't regret it.

    Here's one we did earlier...

    The Fall

The Fall are a band that span almost 30 years. It is said that Mark E Smith could write an album before breakfast if the mood suited, so it's no suprise there are over 100 official releases (studio, live, sessions, compilations). Not only that, if you totalled up all previous band members it'd qualify as a medium sized company.

We'll cut straight to the chase then...

    A Good, Solid Starting Point:

"50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong: 39 Golden Greats"

With such an extensive catalogue, it makes sense to get as full a picture as possible. This compilation gives an oversight on their career (1979-2004), and it packs the punches.

    Studio Albums:

    Mid 80's Fall

Having got a feel for their sound, it's time to be eased into their studio albums. We'll start with a period that saw the band fall into a solid groove and gain recognition worldwide.

"The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall" (1984)

    "This Nation's Saving Grace" (1985)

"Feel the wrath of my Bombast!" says Mark. The man and his band were cooking with gas.

The Dark Side of the 80's

    "I Am Kurious Oranj" (1988)

This is in fact a ballet soundtrack, and it serves as a reminder of the pure creative energy this man possesses. On a good day he could swim the English Channel.

    Post-Punk Fall

If you're into post-punk, immerse yourself in the album that gained the band critical acclaim, and not without good reason.

    "Hex Enduction Hour" (1982)

    The 1990's

    "The Infotainment Scan" (1993)

The high water mark of the 90's, and we're talking a tidal wave. No surf board required, just a life jacket.

    Modern Day Fall

"The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country On The Click)" (2003)

You would think after 25 years, The Fall (like their contemporaries) would have mellowed out and fallen into the AOR bracket. But no. This is a series of bands rather than one entity, and the freedom Mark gives his band members means the sound is as crisp as ever.

    The Fall isn't a band, it's a franchise.

    Thanks to Tom179 and schizodanny!

The remixers are just artists remixing other artists tracks (and they do it on a "I'll scratch your back..." basis).

You can't go far wrong with...

    "100 Great Electro Albums"

For tracks, I'll be back later with the "Orange Label - Electronics Showroom" discography.

Oh, I love her voice so much.
No doubt you must start with Colour The Small One.

If you don't like that piece then you won't like anything by her.
But I'm sure you'll like it.
By the way I know only about 2 full albums.

I don't know much about Pelican.
But about Karate, what I'd recommend is Unsolved, and their self-titled debut is also said to be good. Try one of these two.
