    Hi! I would like to find some obscure indefinable rare electronic music. I'm tired of traditional stuff I'd like to hear something new or special...

    ... matmos could be a breath of fresh air as well.

    I'm looking for something that will totally blow my mind away. The band should be rather unknown, as I've heard most of the stuff which fits my taste in music. I want it to resemble Paul Westerberg, Ryan Adams along with Ben Folds and Jesse Malin.

    A couple of albums for VickEE to try, although they're probably kind of hard to find:

    Matthew Ryan - May Day

    Kevin Salem - Soma City

    They've both released more material, but these are their best albums.

    Another album for VickEE to try (although she might know about it already, as they've become fairly well known in the music press lately) would be The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America. She might also want to go back in time and try out some of Graham Parker's late '70s material, particularly the albums featuring The Rumour as his backup band.

  • EBM stands for "Electronic Body Music" and refers to an outgrowth of industrial music. Basically, techno oriented beats that are made heavier and more "industrial." Front 242 is pretty much the definitive EBM band.
    Never been my cup of tea really, although I love Skinny Puppy, and their early material is definitely in this vein.

    I might actually be able to contribute to this later, but not tonight...

    Hello! :)
    I am looking for something similar to the Arcade Fire and Guillemots albums. Something powerful, and magical but it shouldn't be only instrumental. I need some good new voices too ;)

    Hi all.
    I'm looking for really dark, atmospheric, somewhat technical, and perhaps a little "evil" sounding music.
    Something along the lines of:
    Enslaved, Arcturus, Borknagar, Solefald etc.
    Doesn't necessarily have to be black metal or even heavy at all, I just want something that conveys a really dark and melancholy mood while having strong and memorable melodies. Thanks!

    Do you know maudlin of the Well? It's not black metal, but it's atmospheric, dark and sometimes technical. Try Bath and Leaving Your Body Map.

    @milkbone, re: NDW
    NDW is Neue Deutsche Welle, New German Wave - not identical with German New Wave, mind; rather, a generation of Germans deciding that it isn't all that uncool to make pop songs in your native language and within a year or two in the early eighties flooding the market with so many dadaism-meets-carnival eightieser-than-leggings electropoprock trash singles that even today it's impossible to attend a German flea market and not find the stuff to make up eighty percent of every single record box to wade through ... classic tracks would be 99 Luftballons, Da Da Da, Goldener Reiter, Hurra, hurra, die Schule brennt, Major Tom, Sternenhimmel. Great stuff to make an arse of yourself with at karaoke.

    @mrsaddy:
    Frog Eyes - Tears Of The Valedictorian and Mumm-ra - These Things Move In Threes might be for you - exalted and majestic, quick, never-boring and hook-laden. Frog Eyes are a little more on the weird side, Mumm-Ra perhaps a little poppier. Alternatively you could just go back in time for some Roxy Music, their debut album for foppish theatre-pop à la Arcade Fire (well, it doesn't exactly sound like them, but the spirit's certainly there, it's the sound of silk ties smeared with make-up, icing sugar and a tiny drop of blood), later works for things as dancable as Guillemots.

    God is an Astronaut - The End of the Beginning (2004)

    An excellent album, no fillers at all!

    I won't say anything else, other than to give it a spin.

    A Sunny Day In Glasgow. Both faintly similar (in that they're also a modern band drawing heavily from shoegaze) and rather good, I'd say.

    iLiKETRAINS - no greater similarities apart from the mostly dark but airy/lush (it may sound like a contradiction, but ...) soundscapes, but their 2006 EP "Progress Reform" (their album I haven't heard yet) is absolutely flawless. Think Interpol gone post-rock. Magnificent.

    Hey, just had a question for you all. Where would you classify stuff like Not Breathing's Whitesands Blackhole I made up a tag called complex electronica for it but it would be good to know what other people call it so I could find some more stuff like it. Thanks for any input you have.

    Luminous Orange - Drop Your Vivid Colors (2005)

    A Japanese take on MBV of the "Isn't Anything" era.

    I call it "Experimental Techno", minimal with much twiddling of knobs.

    Can anyone recommend some samba/bossa nova artists like Antonio Carlos Jobim?

    Something along the lines of Jobim's "Wave" album.

    Thanks

    try the warm and fascinating voice of Marisa Monte with her album "Rose and Charcoal" (I think is a good start but she made a bunch of really good albums).

    if you prefer another classical brazilian giant (more in the mood of Jobim) go for João Gilberto and his albums "Brazil's Brilliant" and "Amoroso".
