adthey: Breakbeat Era - Ultra Obscene is a good Drum'n'Bass album. Besides that one, Reprasent is a good place to start.
Drum'n'bass more or less started with the success of Reprasent died when the sophomore album from Roni Size flopped.

Speaking of DnB, do you know about any other folk that have done something like this? I was slightly disappointed with this attempt, to be honest. He could have done much more with the beats: now it just sounds like Derek Bailey in one ear and (pretty boring) DnB in the other.

Any fabulous 2000s artists that cite krautrock as an influence?

A better question would be, who doesn't? :p

In terms of actually sounding like Krautrock, OOIOO are probably the most fabulous.
Then maybe Rovo, Afrirampo, Hoahio, Syzygys,... (basically all contemporary Japanese Free-Rock)

For something completely different, the new Subway album seems to be heavily influenced by Motorik and more electronic Kraut artists.

Hmmm, I'll try to think of more (if noone else comes up with anything).

I think I'll shoot this question here...
What exactly is plunderphonics? RYM says the following:Plunderphonics, a term invented by John Oswald in his essay, "Plunderphonics, or Audio Piracy as a Compositional Prerogative", is a compositional technique that uses one or more existing audio sources and manipulates the sources to create a new composition. It is a form of sound art that uses the technique of sound collage of musical and non-musical sources and sometimes involves field recordings. What do you think? What's the difference with a 'sound collage'? Where do I find such releases/what are good examples?
For the sake of reference, here's the album where I found the term:

  • i think plunderphonics just means "makes good use of a sampler"... i've heard it applied mainly to stuff like DJ Shadow

I don't think DJ Shadow really counts.

It's a kind of sound collage, one that uses mainly pre-existing sounds like music/film/tv samples, jingles etc. and leaves them recognizable, often drawing its effect from placing known sounds into a different context, also the associations they carry from their original context is often more important than the sounds themselves.

Good examples? er... Negativland, Steinski & Mass Media, Stock, Hausen & Walkman

    Thanks for the quick response!

Anyway, that makes most instrumental hip hop I've heard plunderphonics. But that aside, what about the sound collage, then? I don't have any experience with that, either. RYM's page mentions Cage and Xenakis, among some others. Does anyone have any leads on where to start?

    edit:
Thanks to wrdlbrmpf, too. Is the name 'Stock, Hausen & Walkman' a pun on Karlheinz Stockhausen and the use of tape, by any chance?

  • interesting... i may have just encountered the term in 'lazy music journalist land' then!

so what about Pop Will Eat Itself - totally different style i know but they used **tons** of pop-culture samples, certainly leaving them recognizable... i could probably think of a couple more examples... Skinny Puppy too - i've never seen another artist with fan websites devoted to listing all the hundreds of samples used in the music, with the original audio/video links. They also had a banned/"unofficial" video for their track ""Worlock" which was made up solely of loads of snippets from horror/splatter films, lots of dario argento and early peter jackson clips iirc.

I think the line usually gets drawn between artists who are primarily collagists and ones who are primarily songwriters but as always there's overlap, or artists using similar techniques. A lot of industrial artists did sound collages. Sample heavy hip hop or turntablism also comes to mind, where a lot of the samples are used for their significance instead of musical value as well.

"Plunderphonics" specifically applies to John Oswald's albums of the same name I think, but could apply to other sample/sound collage work of a satirical/parody nature such as Negativland, The Bran Flakes, or The Evolution Control Committee.

I'd look through these, and the related tags (though I think we also have a Latin American music desk, maybe there's even someone around who knows about stuff like that).

  • Hi there guys,

After two months, i Got a new request for this desk:

    I´m looking for a big 80´s guitar-rock/pop-album.
You know something like "The Joshua Tree".
My range of request reaches from alternative-pop to new wave.
You know something that´s located somewhere between U2, The Police and Prefab Sprout. I don´t know any songs by Echo and the Bunnymen. Do you think, they match my request? I´m not too interested (at least by now) in the whole 80´s Indie-Scene. I´m reaching for the real big ones ;) That´s what I would love to explore. It would be great if it had an autumnal flair. So please hook me up.

    bye and thanks in advance

Anyone got some tips on this whole 'new weird america' thing? I keep coming across these things while listening to the Acid Mothers Temple & The Paraiso U.F.O. radio and it sounds pretty good.
Anyway, something that goes along with that would be nice. Thanks in advance.

  • So, this is out of the whole new freak-folk-movement, isn´t it?
If it is go for "Devendra Banhart", he´s quite famous, so i guess you know him.
Another great artist, that´s a bit similar is "Laura Barrett". Listen to "Robot ponies". Her whole album "Victory garden" is more psychedelic, with more instruments, like strings and so on. peace

  • Hi there, I´ve posted this already at the shoutbox service,

Hey, just wondering if anyone can help me find some more of a particular style of music I've really been getting into lately. It's something I usually think of as "electronic jazz." Now I don't mean in the nu-jazz sense of the word, where electronic artists try to sound like they're playing jazz. I mean, Flanger is cool and all, but I'm looking for something more original. The kind of music I want is primarily electronic music with a free-jazz sort of structure. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but artists like Burning Star Core, Vladislav Delay, Autechre (especially the albums Confield and Draft 7.30), Black Dice, Supersilent, La Peste, Oval, Kites, (some of) Ryoji Ikeda, Dead Voices On Air, and Merzbow are a few of the names I think of.

I didn't put this in the jazz desk because I don't consider it to be "jazz" in the normal sense of the word; rather, that's the best way I can think to describe the sound I'm searching for.

It'd be great if I could get some recommendations for artists I haven't heard of. I mean, I could just look at the similar artists lists for all those artists, but I think if I got suggestions from a real person who knows what I'm talking about, I'd find much greater things.

Oh, and I'm not opposed to non-electronic music suggestions, but electronics are more appealing to me for some reason. (I blame all the video games I played as a kid (and still play!))

By the way, I've also checked out some "real jazz" like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, and a bit of Herbie Hancock... I think I prefer the latter two more at the moment, but I still consider myself new to the world of "real jazz".

tl;dr glitchy abstract noisy arrhythmic (possibly-)electronic music that experiments with structure and succeeds more often than not.

    Thanks :)

Terre Thaemlitz, SND, Frank Bretschneider and also the rest of the Raster-Noton catalogue sincce you already named Ryoji Ikeda and have some other artists in you library. also some Coil collabs, like ELpH vs. Coil and SoiSong.

for some more technoid musik with a jazz approach, try Cobblestone Jazz. also the new Kreidler - Mosaik 2014. some kind of Krautrock/Jazz jam session with tribalistic beats with intriguing grooves and analog synth patterns.

oh and you might probably like Herbie Hancocks short but very successful excursion in hip hop/electro on Future Shock

i could go on there, but i'll leave you with these for the moment.
