surprised no one's yet mentioned Pere Ubu. I think they can probably draw fans from the Talking Heads as easily as they can say, Suicide, with their mad genius and jerky music. I only have The Modern Dance but I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to listen to them =).

Here's my random post-punk pick for the week:

    Standing up Straight

The Wolfgang Press is, in my opinion, one of the most underlooked of what I'll call the "first wave" of 4AD bands. This record has a definite dark edge and would certainly sound great next to, say, Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, or early Cocteau Twins. However, you can also hear the beginnings of their forays into funk and soul that marked their later recording. Lots of hints here of the brilliance that would come on Bird Wood Cage (let's not get me started on that one just yet!).

    Picks:
    My Life
    Fire-Fly
I Am the Crime (featuring Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins)

What do you say we open a 4AD Kiosk?

Wonderful idea. I had kinda thought that was covered by the record label collectors kiosk, but I think 4AD certainly deserves its own kiosk. While we're at it, what about a Factory Records kiosk too?

    Let's do it! :)

    Then next week, Creation.

  • This thread is just full of great recommendations. Someone could compile an awesome record collection just by picking up all the albums that have been discussed. Now that I think about it, I guess that's the whole point of this group ;)

I must check out T.C. Matic.

My post-punk record of the week:

    The Wake - Harmony + Singles (1982)

    Choice Cuts
    Here Comes Everybody
    The Drill
    The Old Men

They'll hate me for saying it, but I regard The Wake as the first New Order (they had that sound while New Order themselves still sounded like Joy Division).

    A thoroughly good album.

@Cylob: Best album to start with is Compil Complet (disc 1) (& disc 2 offcourse). As the name states, a rather complete compilation of their best songs

  • I highly recommend both the television personalities and the soft boys to anyone interested in the other side of the british post-punk scene. TVP's were the core of what would become the C-86 movement. And the soft boys were just really, really good. Kingdom of Love has one of my favorite guitar parts in it ever. Also, Josef K would be a good listen for anyone interested in the TVP's as well.

Are You Indie? Do You Hate Indie Snobs? You know why? Because Indie Elitism Supports Terrorism
  • Another thing, if you get the modern dance, save yourself the effort of having to go out later and get dub housing as well. Both of them are seminal. proto and post-punk at the same time, it's really quite the feat if you ask me.

I've decided that the whole post-punk era is my favorite period of music.

I am shocked, simply SHOCKED that Public Image Ltd are yet to be mentioned. Metal Box and Public Image are two of the best post-punk albums ever. Keith Levene is the Jimi Hendrix of post-punk, and John Lydon shows his hipster side. Not to mention the pounding drums and Jah Wobble's amazing Can-inspired basslines that give a point of reference next to all the atonal shit the other two are doing.

You know, I was actually thinking the same thing yesterday when I posted about The Wolfgang Press. Glad to see someone mentioned them.

PiL kick so much ass. They're a million times better than The Sex Pistols.

... if you take "Never Mind the Bollocks" out of the equation. :D

I'm just listening to Metal Box, I remember some of the older kids having it at the time (must be worth a few bob now). It's funny how PIL and Siouxsie went hand-in-hand in people's collections, yet both bands despised each other's style. Probably just jealous rivalry.

    Following on from Metal Box:

Killing Joke - Killing Joke (1980)

    Choice Cuts
    Requiem
    Wardance
    Primitive

Harking back to The Wolfgang Press, they're very like The Danse Society, so I'd recommend checking them out (anything you can get hold of).

Killing Joke isn't on the same level as Metal Box or Public Image imo, but it does kick a helluva lotta ass.

I can't stand PiL in large doses, but the Soft Boys and TvP and the Feelies and especially Pere Ubu are all fantastic in their own ways.

Also, am I the only person who thinks that
Return of the Giant Slits is criminally overlooked? Far surpasses "Cut" in my opinion.

television personalities manage to effortlessly straddle the fence between twee and post-punk. i agree with thorinO about PiL though-i used to quite like them, but looking back the reason was probably because i was horribly depressed. i've found that with quite a few post-punk bands that i used to love (joy division aside), i used to quite enjoy noise and discordance, but now it just grates on me.

My American Underground pick of the week:

King Missile - Fluting on the Hump/Mystical Shit (1987)

    Choice Cuts
    Muffy
    Take Stuff From Work
    Sensitive Artist

No end of fun here. "Take Stuff From Work" basically encourages you to thief everything from the biro to the desk, while "Wuss" is an admition of being the wimpiest guy in school. The music's not half bad either. Entertaining from A to Z.

    Wire

I have the three first Wire albums passionately, but as their other output isn't as good, basing on what I read everywhere, I'd like to check out a similar band. I love Mission of Burma, The Birthday Party, Bauhaus and a whole lot others, I don't know much about Magazine yet though...

Tuinoptredens - semi acoustic minifestival www.tuinoptredens.be
(with An Pierlé, Amatorski, Broken Glass Heroes, Frank Vander Linden, Marble Sounds, Mintzkov and more)
