Description :
Are you getting sick of the way mainstream bands like The Killers, Muse, and Coldplay are being called indie? Then join this group!

Remember that you don't have to hate these bands, you just have to dislike the way the indie term is being misused/overused. Wether you listen to indie or mainstream music, you are welcome to join as long as you agree with this statement.

Nice to see that we have aimed 100 members. I'm now back from summer vacations.

The two groups are far from the same, even if they resemble one another. Joining another group that's different just because it's larger and 'similar' is redundant, especially if you don't agree with the message from this other group. Nice try.

And success and popularity have nothing to do with it. First of all, people, there's nothing wrong with being successful as long as you don't give up your ideals to get there. Second of all, you could be the most popular band on the planet and if you're on an independent label, you're indie. Indie isn't really a genre at all.

I agree wholeheartedly with the premise of this group. Joke at the expense of Indie music: There's a rumor about [real] indie music, the less popular it is the better it is. If that's so, the best band ever doesn't exist.

And they were indie to boot. If you did yr homework, you'd find that they were signed to SST in the 80s which was owned by Greg Ginn from Black Flag. It was a well and truely indie label and although they later signed to DGC, they released several albums before going to a major and they toured extensively on pretty much no money which was one of the defining aspects of indie musicianship at the time. Although independent labels go back to the 70s with Sun et all, it was the 80s when it really kick started.

George Gallimore, how the hell were Sonic Youth grunge? How do you even define grunge? They took the basic premise of punk-rock to heart, that you don't have to obey any kind of convention. Aesthetically, artistically and musically, they took this to an extreme and delved into experimental depths. Grunge was a term cunningly adopted by Sub Pop to market their music nearly 10 years after Sonic Youth started. To call yr point irellevant is an understatement.

it really pisses me off when people tell me that they listen to alternative, i think to myself- alternative to what? music is supposed to be a universal language of people and an art form that should never be confined to a certain sound just because they are on an independent label, it' not a genre- saying something is indie or alternative should never be an indicator of what kind of music the artist creates.

However, the point is not about disliking the indie bands that are doing it well in the mainstream charts. It's about disliking the way that artists that ARE NOT indie are being called indie - like The Killers and Coldplay, they are truly commercial bands signed to the majors of the major label, and I can't see why people continue to call them indie.

"Indie" is about being an independent band, the genre doesn't matter.

I laughed pretty hard at Raidiohead being the top artist.

I see your point, but I had to give the non-indie artists a name. I think mainstream is what suits the most. Maybe I should have called them 'commercial'. Anyway, I guess most people see the point.

Everywhere I look there's indie...the shittiest mainstream bands are labelled indie, it's so disgusting! This group has been made for me.

I'm more irritated by the notion that "indie" is a genre of music.

Hey everybody! I've just joined the group, so this is just a mere introduction :) I'm not sure myself what I'd call indie, but definitely not Coldplay or Muse... And I'd say that Arctic Monkeys, for instance, could be considered indie since they are under an independent label (Domino), but... maybe they are too successful and well-known now (if that's a requisite to be indie)? Mmm... I guess it's easier to say which bands are not indie than which ones are :)

Silly flyawayamanda. Just because we don't like the term being misused means we hate the bands. Silly silly flyawayamanda.
