I have realized I like jazz. What bands should I start listening to?

Until today I have been only listening to rock, metal, alternative, emo, screamo, punk and music like that. But today I have discovered jazz for me on last.fm. I would like to get some music on my iPod and I don't know what. Would someone please recommend me something

  • you sound like me. Miles Davis is pretty cool He is what was recommended to me when I asked the same question you have a couple of months back

I want to be a girl like you, The way you swing your hips in jeans,
I want to wear my face like you, Shiseido Mac and Maybelline,
I want to paint the town with you, And tickle you until you scream,
I want to fall in love with you, I want to say I do
  • here is the link to my forum post http://www.last.fm/group/Jazz/forum/15507/_/300520

Diana Krall ( best of ); like summary of classic jazz
Jing Chi - Jing chi ; if you are looking for a rocking jazz (fusion)
Akın Eldes - Kafi ; i don't think you can find but..
Billy Cobham if you are looking for funky stuff

i'm also new listener (about 1,5 year) so i'm not sure if my recommendations are good.. Last thing i can say you may try guitarist, born after 50s.. they will more or less be familiar for you, because they are usually influenced by rock guitarist considerably ..

  • If you like rock music perhaps you should start with Weather Report, Return to Forever or Miles Davis era "Bitches Brew and forward".

After that you can try some classics.

  • 100 Essential Jazz Albums

You could work your way through this list I just came across: New Yorker's "100 Essential Jazz Albums"

You just scan other people's libraries and find out what you want to listen to. Otherwise, there's just too much jazz to say go listen to this. You'd have to start in the 20's and stop in today to really KNOW stuff, I suppose

best way to start is listening to Charlie Parker, smooth and easy but will get you right into the heart of jazz. then try 50's and 60's Miles.
btw. i advise reading Miles autobigraphy, u will get to know a lot of bands and it's really easier to understand and feel jazz. that's how i started.
Good Luck on the new, better;), jazz way!

first try Alex Skolnick trio ,one album should be enough, then jump to the Trio Beyond then try Chet Baker,Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus,Pat Martino if they sound too weird for you, then try some blues first like b.b. king, buddy rich and so on, then switch to jazz

I have to quote you.. It's been my perfect road to jazz..

  • Pat Metheny, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday... there's loads of genre's within jazz, too.

  • I can't say for everyone else...but here's how I got my start.

Start with Miles Davis - Kind of Blue.

Yes, it's typical, but it's a bloody classic for a reason.

But from there you get the list of folks who played in that quartet and dig up THEIR stuff (Coltrane, Red Garland, Bill Evans, etc) and then all the people THEY played with (like McCoy Tyner with Trane or Monk and Trane).

You can do that with the second great quartet too. You get Miles playing with Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter...it just opens up a WHOLE MESS OF stuff.

And once you start you never really stop.

You might like Bill Frisell, Critters Buggin, and Mahavishnu Orchestra too . . .

  • Me, I started with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, then I changed to dixieland and big bands (pretty soon), and after a couple of years to modern jazz, now I listen to this and some of comtemporary stuff (like Candy Dulfer, Esbjörn Svensson Trio or Jazzamor).

In my opinion Miles (especially Sketches of Spain, Kinf of Blue)and early albums of John Coltrane will be the best (like ,,Blue train). You should also try to listen Jan Garbarek, and famous jazz albums like ,,Time Out" or Brillant Corners. If you want to hear some free jazz artists start listening Ornette Colmann Albert Ayler and later staff of John Coltrane (Love Supreme ).

,,Take that young boy's shoe and add it to the broth"
  • I you listen to metal/hammer/destroyer/bulldozer-type of music - check this out:

    Vulcan Worlds

Mahavishnu Orchestra will also be on the way.

I started with Miles Davis and John Coltrane, those 2 artists inspire me to find another music like they did. I guess best for the start with jazz :)
