  • There are a lot of books out there but I recommend going to a good teacher, playing along to some good jazz CDs and getting your head around playing the right feel. Steve Houghton has several good books as does Dave Hassell. make sure your drum teacher is someone who is experienced in playing Jazz. Oh yes and while your at it learn to read drum music!

  • yeah your teacher should be able to turn you on to some recordings to listen to, also. getting inside the style is one of the most important things, so listening is going to be crucial.

  • try John Rileys Book "The Art of Bop Drumming"..best book....a lot of independence exercises, solo ideas, brush techniques and sheets(real book style) with playalong...and many more :-)

Sorry this is late, but i'd say the most important thing is being idiomatic. Basically, listen to a lot of records to pick up drumming nuances and styles, and then try and filter these influences into your own sound. This takes time and is a lot more difficult than it sounds (i've been trying for quite a few years now and i'm only very partially there!).
