Louisville KY's best-known independent music store--ear X-tacy--just went out of business. Here's an article about it from the local newspaper ... http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20111031/NEWS01/310310051/

Ahh, indie record stores, where we music lovers go to have our egos shattered by overweight, neckbearded, middle-aged virgins...

I just returned to Vinyls again after over 20 years and found a great record store in the Pittsburgh area. I plan to visit and buy regularly!

The area I live in has 3 indie record shops, 1 of which seems to be thriving. The short drive up to Santa Barbara gives me even more and if I'm feeling really froggy I drive down to Amoeba in Hollywood. I try to support the local ones in Ventura though... I'm just glad vinyl has taken off again so that the indie shops aren't going out of business as quickly as they were.

Over the last couple of months my local has been closing down. It went from a 50% to a 70% sale, and as much as I loved the closing down sale prices I'm going to miss it so much. I don't think I'll ever be able to happily shop in HMV again.

Thank god my local shop is still going strong after over 30 years of being in business. Never been in a shop with more expertise.

My local indy shop closed earlier this year (thanks, downloaders). Big bummer, as there isn't really another 'indy' choice for me in this region. In the aftermath, my solution has been three-fold: 1) used stuff at FYE whenever possible (avoiding new stuff), 2) finding older/out-of-print stuff on Amazon & eBay, and 3) stopping by independent stores when I'm traveling.
