A friend told me my action was really high. I adjusted the truss rod, and chords are ridiculously easy to hold now, gosh, wish I knew that from the start.

  • kralj_svemira

Yeah, went through this tutorial, it doesn't sound bad at all. But this is a bit more than just strumming a chord, I think I have to find some Music Theory For Dummies books :).

Bought a slide. Anyone know a good tutorial for playing slide guitar?

I got a compliment today! I was fiddling with a friends cheap classical guitar, and her sister said that it sounded good :). Paranoid Android, Creep, Hurt, and some Belle and Sebastian.

  • kralj_svemira

LOL. I've decided to start dealing with barre chords. Figured those are easier than fingerpicking...

I found a great site for free guitar lessons: http://www.justinguitar.com/, he has loads of videos which I've been using recently. I also bought a DVD from the same shop where I got my guitar, http://www.dangleberrymusic.co.uk#http://www.last.fm/ but they don't have much tutorial stuff there. I also find youtube is really good for guitar lessons - like this guy: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lBfI0sY9QhQ&feature=related

I've actually been using Guitar Noise for a long time, I have no idea why I didn't recommend it for this group, glad someone else did. It's an extremely good site if you want to get better at playing guitar (and if you want to learn some music theory).

  • GustavLW

Well, you're genre seems to be mainly folk music, and that is generally not too hard to play. It will work out fine, I think.

  • whoaacapybara

i just found this website: http://www.guitarnoise.com/ its pretty neat, they've got a whole section on "easy songs for beginners" they go through everything step-by-step, and they've got audio to help you out, plus they throw in a bit of music theory in with every lesson. pretty cool, i think.

Hi, everyone, I'm Adrian. I have some guitar playing experience, but have a tendency to noodle around rather than do something productive (like learn songs) with the instrument. I'm hoping here I can settle down and eventually become the guitarist I was destined to be. Boy, I hope that last part didn't sound too corny! :-)

Hi guys, I'm Michael aka virtual OZ - an independent musician, singer & songwriter I also just started to read this book and I saw this Group in the profile of one of my friends, so that's why I'm here. Cheers

Sweeps - Do them slow (like 8th triplets at 100-120 BPM), then slowly go faster. Don't except to do crazy 16th triplet sweeps at 180 BPM at any time soon...

Hello there! That's a really cool group! Thumbs up!! c@ndy

Any advice for sweep picking? (:

Oh, by the way. I just signed up on the site JamPlay..11 quid a month. The tuition is very good. Im starting from the first lesson working upwards. The tutor I chose is fantastic, great tuition videos, online guitar apps, ask the tutor himself questions, keep a log of your progression. I reckon its well worth it.

I second about Barre chords...very useful, tricky to master..so yer..that for me...Oh and some good, non-anally retentive songs that use barre chords, LOL.

    octobre 2008
  • amplifiedshock

Argh, haven't played guitar in a while. Been too busy. =[

    octobre 2008
  • kralj_svemira

I hate barre chords. I'd like to learn this song, but there's no way I can switch between E and B and A fast enough. And it's not even a particularly fast song :(.

    octobre 2008
  • coolchris

Anally retentive? Hmmm, looks like someone got out of the wrong side of the bed, lol. If you are still offering help, Id be interested in ANY help you may have for a beginner.

    octobre 2008
  • Dookiac

doesn't matter how you play a guitar, as long as you make a sound... whatever sound that is, play it loud and proud.

    octobre 2008
  • coolchris

I think I found a good one for price and quality: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar/product/Vintage/V300/10/1 http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop/flypage/product_id/14261 Solid Spruce top as well for that outstanding price. Also won the "Best Guitar for under 1000" by Guitar Magazine. Now I have not played it, but looking on the web specifically about this model, I can only find praise for it. I am VERY tempted.

my uncle actually fixed an old old Yamaha FG360 for me to use, but having no clue about the characteristics and specs guitars i have no idea whether this is a good choice for a beginner like myself :\

Thanks for letting me know about the Cort Earth 100.. I'll keep that in mind while i search for the "right" guitar.

    septembre 2008
  • coolchris

Thanks again for your advice. Ill have a look around the stores for one and have a play and if it suits me Ill get it from the internet link you gave.

  • coolchris

Hi Raisin-Girl. Thanks for the Welcome. The Takamine G440C looks good for me, but here in the UK its about £250..which is out of my budget Im afraid, so Im looking for something upto £150..with a thin neck, lol. At the moment I have a crappy Encore Acoustic..which sounds awful. I was an idiot and bought a starter pack...before finding this site. Oh well. I appreciate you having a look around for me. I started playing the classical guitar when I was 9, but packed it in when I was 13 and have not touched a guitar until now...some 30 years later. I know the basic chords, but as I said the Encore I have it hampering me from learning and implementing the more complex chords..so as soon as I have a decent guitar that suits me, I will be able to start getting back into it properly. Cheers.

Hi, I'm Richard and as I'm fast approaching 30 I thought I'd give it one last shot to learn to play

    septembre 2008
  • coolchris

Hi. Ive read with great interest your article on Guitars for the beginner, and was wondering..apart from the Takamine G440C, what would be a good guitar for small handed people..guitar with a slim neck would be great. See I always have trouble with the bridge chords...damn they piss me off, lol. Im in the UK by the way. Thanks.
