  • Yeah, will they be as soft as they've always been :D. And I've always hated really short fingernails also :/.

    Good to know, thanks.

Guess so, but I'm not 100% sure ;)

  • This is very cool. Le Valse D'Amelie on a classical guitar.

I have been practising a lot recently. Have made a lot of progress in the months I have been playing.

Chords - I know plenty of different chords which I can form easy.

Switching chords - Can do a pretty good job.

Scales- I can do 2 scales with no problems and pretty fast too. :) I was advised to learn 1 or 2 very important scales VERY WELL first rather than learning them all.

Barre Chords - Can form a dozen barre chords with no problems.

Switching Barre Chords - A lot of improvement needed.

Power chords - Need these as I want to play punk guitar. Ironically, im much more better at standard chords. Still I am okay with these so far but a lot more speed is needed

Hammer on's- Im getting better at these but still a lot of progress needed

Pull Offs - A lot of help needed. I just don't get what I have to do to make them. How fast do I have to take my finger off the string to get a sound?

I know a few good other things including the theory side but that is all I can remember right now.

Be cool to get advice and hear how other people are getting on :) Thanks

when you do a pull off, you usually want to just nick the string with your finger when you take it off. Its hard to describe in text but you kinda want to slide your finger down and nick the string when you take it off. At least thats how ive been taught to do it and it seems to work fairly well.

Ive been playing for just over a year and a half, so i can do everything mythfall has mentioned as well as bending and slides and vibrato

kralj i find if i stop playing for a week or 2 due to being too busy my fingers callous up a lot quicker then what they did when i first started playing, eg when i first started playing they were sore for at least 2 weeks, now maybe a couple of days and they are fine, and even then it doesnt hurt anywhere near as what it did before, its more just slightly annoying :P

various songs by metallica are good to look at when learning as well, they use a lot of various techniques which you can sharpen your skills on as well as using a lot of natural minor scales etc to help boost up your theory skills

Problems with power chords? What the... Look, just place your fingers like this:

Take the lowest tone with your index finger
Then, you take the "fifth" with your ring finger
And then, if needed, the high tone with your pinky

    E
    B
    G 9 5
    D 9 5
    A 7 3
    E

So take the "seven" with your index finger, The lowest nine with your ring and the highest nine with your pinky. Then you just slide down to the lower powerchord without moving your fingers. Powerchord riffs have to be REALLY fast to be a problem when it comes to speed.

If it's the strumming speed you have problems with, try to alternate strum with small movements. Very easy and comfortable.

Thank you for the advice :) I have been practising power chords a lot lately and all that has helped very much.

How is everyone elses practasing going?

  • I got an ukulele, so I'm goofing around with that nowadays. My fretting fingers could use the exercise, I'm still pretty slow with some chord changes, and it's fun :)

  • I got the flying-V shaped ukelele, and am doing all the Steve Vai 10-hour workout chromatic exercises that fit on only 4 strings.

    Plus it looks awesome!

  • Found another great teacher on YouTube. Well, he found me, techically. Anyway, I watched a couple of his videos, and they look great. 49 videos so far, and he's pretty active there, so I expect frequent updates.

I had a look at some of his videos and they seem decent enough for learning from. Have you started learning any of the songs he has put up there yet?

  • Yup, Coldplay - Don't Panic, Radiohead - Karma Police, eventhough I kinda know it by now, Modest Mouse - Float On, The Eagles - Hotel California. I like his style, and the fact that he's so committed.

I've been wondering if there was a "best angle" to hold your guitar when playing?
I've had no problem getting the notes to sound clearer near the top of the neck, but the farther down it gets the harder it is to sound clear.
Or, would this just be a hand/finger strength issue?

  • You're supposed to hold it in any way you can that places no stress whatsoever on the nerve cluster going through your wrist (the carpal tunnel). For most people, this is not a question of angle, but of strap length. Let me know if that helps...

    Thanks.
If I played for too long the inside of my wrist would start to burn pretty badly, which wouldn't happen if I was sitting down.
This should be helped by having the strap shorter?

  • Yes, a shorter strap should do it.

Yeah, my wrist didn't burn when I played with a shorter strap.
    Thanks.
