    General Guitar Discussion

In this threat you can discuss about guitar gear, your progression as guitar player or ask help for certain part of the song you are learning etc.
Remember that there´s no stupid questions.

  • Just ranting a bit.

I broke my left arm 10-15 years ago, and I figured it wouldn't really be helpful with my guitar playing skills. But it was fine, at least at the start, with A Horse With No Name, and other songs you begin with. But then I tried Californication. Index finger on the first fret, ring finger on the third fret. And it hurts. :/
I'll have to learn how to use my pinky properly. :)

    Cool thread :)
I'm really unhappy cause my right hand (rythm mostly), seriously still sucks... It's kinda frustrating 'cause my left hand improved a lot during the past few months and is now getting to a "not that bad" level. (Well, not in a Joe Satriani way, but it's not the kind of stuff I wanna play anyway).
Hope you'll recover as soon as possible kralj !

Look at Jussi Yliskoski guitarist of Disco Ensemble right hand technique. Holy crap! And It´s even more impressive when you actually see him live doing that.
I didn´t find any right hand exercise with google and I need to improve right hand too. Maybe I´m gonna ask one of my guitarist friend some tips next time I see him.

  • Well, I kinda recovered 10-15 years ago :). I'm just wondering if that's normal when you break something, or if someone botched it.

Anyway, a mate of mine gave me the link to this video yesterday, and I found it quite depressing. How the hell will I ever be able to do the stuff this guy does?
I listened to Incubus a couple of years ago, and Stellar was probably my favourite track. Now I know I'll never be able to play it :)

    That clip is pretty awesome!
If it comforts you, I broke my ankle a year ago and It stopped my basketball training so I had to quit in the team. I just couldn´t keep up and everyone else had progressed a lot.
It´s great that you didn´t guit your hobby because the broken arm.

  • Erm... It happened a long time ago, I only recently got a guitar :)

about.com has some free guitar lessons that are very thorough.

and as far as stretching one's fingers, with practice it'll be better. though I'm an absolute beginner, I've improved so much. I can stretch to 4 frets! and I have the smallest hands in the world.

by the way, can someone explain what "pentatonic" means?

  • I like your flowers.
  • What does the thickness of the pick influence? The thinner it is, the lighter the sound?

I'm having problems with my Aimee Mann song, it sounds rough and loud, not quite as soft as she plays it. What are the possible causes for it, other than me and my heavy hand? :)

To play really light sounds, I use extra light gauge picks. They're really flexible. You can easily control your volume with them.

Otherwise I use a small piece of cigarette pack that I fold to adjust its thickness. It's really handful when you've lost all your picks.

Breaking your arm won't do any difference on your abilities to play guitar (of course, it depends on how bad the break was). I've broken both of my arms twice the last 10 years, last time was 3 years ago when I broke both of my bones in my right arm, and I can play guitar fine, although my flexebility in my right ankle is a bit lowered.
Stretching comes with time. When I started out, I sucked. Now I can stretch 6-7 frets, but no more... please.

Pentatonic means that the scale only contains 5 different tones in each octave - usually, scales contain 7 tones. Two tones are removed, and the 5 that are left sounds great with blues, country, classic rock and that kind of stuff.

/You said you wanted some "more seasoned" guitarists with patience to join the group, so I did. I've just been playing for a year but I got tons of patience and know a lot of theory. I play mostly melodic metal stuff, but I know fairly much about classic rock, the blues and acoustic as well.

I can't turn my left arm as far as I can the right one. With my palm facing down, the right arm can do a full 180 degree turn, and the left one can only go up to around 90.

Oh, that's pretty bad. I got some problems with that in my right arm (it has taken quite a beating...) but it doesn't affect my guitar playing the slightest. Do you find it discomfortable to play with your arm like that? Maybe you should try to find another position to hold your guitar in.

  • Yeah, I have my own way of holding the guitar, and it looks a bit... odd :). I have to keep my left arm pretty close, and tilt the guitar slightly. Because of that, the body of the guitar is way out, sometimes it even slides off my knee, and I'm strumming around the part where the neck meets the body.

best thing to do to get your picking speed and also the fingering quicker is to find a good wee scale progresiion and use that as a warm up and play it just as u start to play each time

I broke my left arm and wrist more than ten years ago, and I really had a hard time nailing the barre chords. It took me more than six months to find a comfortable position to play em.

So I think broken bones can be an handicap at the beggining, but with an extra dose of patience everyone's able to play normaly.

    i HATE barre chords.

  • Well, an acquaintance of mine has been playing for a couple of years now, she still doesn't know barre chords :). And she does pretty well without them :D

Sure, you can devellop your own technic to avoid them :)
But sometimes it doesn't sound exactly like the original. For instance I play songs like Creep and Karma Police without using barre chords, l sounds good though...

  • If I stop playing in the future, will my fingers go back to normal? :)

Do you mean will you loose the corn your fingers growed ?
Well If so, yes but it will regrow faster if you ever decide to replay.

A friend of mine paused playing for like six months and his corn came back in like 10 days when he decided to grab his guitar again.
It hurts way less restarting practicing, than starting practicing for the 1rst time.
