Gothic Metal seems to be the most misunderstood/mislabeled genre. Gothic Metal (and its variation Goth Metal) is a subgenre of Heavy Metal.
1. "Gothic" is characterized as a combination of dark and often melancholy atmospheres with emphasis on a beauty and the beast vocal style.
2. "Metal" is defined as thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, and emphatic beats.

Gothic Metal: Sirenia, Lacuna Coil 96-00, Darkwell, Elis, Asrai, Macbeth, Obsidia, Dreamgrave, Lost in Tears, Mandylion, Abonos, Chalice, Miraclem, Mistralth, Vanguard
Gothic Doom Metal: Type O Negative, Draconian 00-, Avrigus, Cultus Sanguine, Ashen Mortality, Century Sleeper, AnubiZ, End My Sorrow, Elysium (Autl)
Gothic Death Metal: Lacrimas Profundere 93-01, Draconian 94-99, Orphanage, Theatre of Tragedy 93-98, Sacriversum, Tartosgardh, Royal Anguish, Mandrake, Mjölnir
Gothic Industrial Metal: Moonspell 98-00, Paradise Lost, Crematory
Gothic Symphonic Metal: Within Temptation, After Forever, Epica, Tristania, Xandria, Atargatis, Gate of Sorrow, Angel's Sorrow
Gothic Black Metal: Moonspell 89-97, Ancient Ceremony, Indian Fall, AmethistA, Darzamat, Forever Sleep, Scarlet Moon
Gothic Progressive Metal: Amartia, Ashen Mortality
Gothic Alternative Metal: Evereve, Lacuna Coil 01-06, Lacrimas Profundere 02-08, Moonspell 01

These are NOT Gothic Metal bands, but often mislabeled so:
Nightwish, Lunatica, Evanescence, Inkubus Sukkubus, The Gathering (since 1994)
