Geek Music members - post your projects here

In a room full of geeks, I figure a few of us have some interesting projects we're working on. If you have something you'd like to share with the group, post it below, and maybe we'll take a look.

This could include a snazzy web site you've designed, your photos at flickr, some AJAX tomfoolery, etc. NOTE that this is NOT an invitation to spam the forum.

I'll start things off - most of the music listed on my page lately has been playing as I worked on Mealographer, a site where you can enter meals and see nutrition information. It started as a project for a grad school course but I am continuing to (slowly) add to it. Feel free to check it out.

I'm working on an internet store for one of the region's largest internet provider, it will use AJAX in the administration area, but probably not while shopping, even though I may add some features later one.

It uses PHP, MySQL, XHTML and CSS.

I've created a webcomic, which is randomly generated from seed art, using a word as the random seed. It's very exciting (maybe) and can be seen here: http://redfrogrise.com/comic

The only programming involved has been a little HTML and PHP to customize Wordpress, but take a look at:

    Unsought Input.

It does cover some geek subjects. Like why we should get rid of the metric system.

BTW, I am pretty impressed with Wordpress. They make it really easy to customize and build plugins, though there is some weirdness in their API.

A while back, I decided to clean out my closets and drawers and put all my home made music on a website. It's not even close to being finished, but here it is:
    http://lurholm.net
And it's in Swedish. Sorry. Some of the music is in English though.

    Shine those shoes, Bill!

    My Artist Page

Hey guys, I finally got around to uploading some of my music. Currently there are three tracks available (full download!) Fireman Joe

TrackOne - The first track I ever made; short, electronic, thumpin'. =D
Funky Triad Rap - The first track I recorded my own vocals for. A rap entry for Tha Sauce's People's Remixing Competition. Nerdcore style with self-depreciative parody. ;P
Chaos Cave - A track for a small game I'm writing the score for. Expect more of this in the future. A friend likened it a bit to Chris Vrenna, while my sister says it reminds her of the Perfect Dark soundtrack. =)

    Hope you like it! =)

    Say It To My Face

That's the MySpace page for some of my music projects. I only get 4 songs at a time, so I try to rotate it a lot. I think some of those songs are free downloads on last.fm as well. Maybe. Try this: Say It To My Face

Another project of mine is ¡Akerue!. I know some of that stuff is free. If you like Negativland or The Books, etc... there might be something interesting there for you. You could try Mi Jong first. It's probably the least accessible. :-)

i like psy and i like folk, and i like how your thinking

    advice?
suspicious minds - i liked each element: the chirpy guitar, the samples about our children and the war on terrorism etc.. the mood conflicts a little. in my opinion you should pick different guitar tunes for the different samples to add to the mood of it.. you can have many moods in a song - think about it

raw zann - you can have psychotic random samples, but don't let them clash with your fantastic folk lyrics or any guitar solos. maybe not-so-loud or ambient sound doesn't clash with lyricsfantastic song to pick though. i've always wanted to record a somber song in this style and put some sound of a 'city gutter sitting' ambient sound over it, or record the lyrics in the toilet of a loud pub.or somfin like.

la foudre - nice, i think evil ghosts invaded 1/3rd way through.. was there double bass in any of these tracks or just a second guitar?

if i was carpet- i like

mi jong, adjust the levels on the sample where it says 'ask you' its way too high, and sounds like a chainsaw when in comes through my speakers..not bad

r4ttl3: thanks for all the constructive comments. I'm listening to your album as I write this, and I'm liking what I hear.

Electromagnetic Candy: this is a fun track. I love how the sample re-emerges at the end.

Breakfast Pop: it's fun working with familiar samples like Pac-Man and Red Dwarf. I did an entire song from Homestar Runner samples for the ¡Akerue! project (it's called Homestra - you can check it out if I uploaded it...

Insanity Freaks: the noise you generate is quite interesting, but you have a tendency to find a cool sound and repeat it - a lot. This one ends too fast for me.

Mass Disfunction: good samples, but again the synth sounds go into repeat. I guess I have the same problem at times.

OK, I have to go. I'll listen to more later.

OH, and I put a new song up on the Say It To My Face page. Check it out and let me know what you think. The music was recorded a long time ago, but the samples are all new for me.

  • I'm working on a piece of music which I would consider experimental/avant-garde/progressive, that is mostly in 6/4 and in the key of B, for Chapman Stick, Ostrich Guitar (CCCCCC), Ostrich Bass (BBBBB), Guitar (ACACACC), Bass (ACACA) and Drums and it sounds very geeky.

I would love to hear that. Chapman Stick has such a fascinating sound - it always reminds me of Bruce Cockburn. Never heard of Ostrich Guitar or Bass, but hey, it sounds fascinating. Let us know if you post any of this stuff.

  • At the moment, it only exists in Guitar Pro form, unfortunately, but I will post it once it is finished (whenever that may be).

And Ostrich tuning is tuning all strings to the same note (for example on a regular guitar (EADGBE), E down to D, A down to the same D, D, G down to that second D, same for B, E down to D (one octave higher than the Ds on the D/G/B-string). Lou Reed sometimes used that tuning on Velvet Underground songs.

  • Here's a very, very tiny little excerpt from it: http://media.putfile.com/Exhibit-A
    But only in midi sound.
