Lucie Silvas – What You're Made Of

Change is coming through my shadow. My shadow's shedding skin, I've been picking my scabs again.

  • I have no idea when I copied this...

Up to this point in the course, you have studied what is known as
classical physics. Classical physics includes most of the ideas
about light, energy, heat, forces, and electricity and magnetism up
to about 1900. The golden age of classical physics occurred at the very
end of the 19th century. By this time, Newton’s ideas of forces and gravitation
were over 200 years old, and our knowledge of physics had been
added to immensely by the work of James Clerk Maxwell, Michael
Faraday, and others. It seemed as though nearly everything in physics had
been explained. In the spring of 1900, in a speech to the Royal Institution
of Great Britain, the great Irish physicist William Thomson (Figure 14.1)
    — otherwise known as Lord Kelvin — stated that “… the beauty and
clearness of the dynamical theory of light and heat is overshadowed by
two clouds….” You could paraphrase Kelvin as saying “the beauty and
clearness of physics is overshadowed by two clouds.” One “cloud” was
the problem of how to explain the relationship between the temperature
of a material and the colour of light the material gives off. The other
“cloud” had to do with an unexpected result in an experiment to measure
the effect of Earth’s motion on the speed of light.
Kelvin was confident that these two clouds would soon disappear.
He was wrong! Before the year was out, the first of these clouds
“broke” into a storm the effects of which are still being felt today! In
this chapter, you will meet one of the strangest ideas in all of science.
In many ways, this chapter represents the end of classical physics. You
will learn that light is not only a wave, but also a particle. Stranger
still, you will learn that things you thought were particles, such as
electrons, sometimes act like waves! Hang on!

"Beaten, bloody, broken, I leave you here."

... In my local supermarket, food is quantized because the product of a om-nom-nom-o-static monopole (sqrt(protein**2 + carbohydrate**2 + vitamins**2)) and a om-nom-nom-o-magnetic monopole (pound coin / 100.0) is quantized, namely the cost of living -- oh wait, entropy fail at line 00100.

When you fire a pea at the twin slits it will ocasionally split in half and go through both simultaneously, and then spookily unsplit the other side and recombine with a (random?) phase angle. If the phases are pi out the cat will die; if the phases are synchronized the cat will live. What happens if they are pi/2 out? Does the cat become imaginary. like Alice's???

The little mannequin inside the nucleus has a protractor made up of 137 degrees. If the pea hits the orbital when it reads 0 degrees, the orbital gets a buff :) Else (136 times out of 137) nothing happens, and the pea goes straight through without collapsing the wave function. If we're really lucky though (and have the right frequency oscillator), we can "cheat" and warp the orbital to score a point every shot, like the pinball wizard. Spooky thing happen then ...
