Victrola Favorites: Artifacts From Bygone Days

More than any other album Victrola Favorites unearths some truly alien sounds upon the listener. Quite a few long lost treasures and forgotten classics. The world over is represented. And most of the genres and styles I listed earlier are represented here on two CDs.

Choro 1906-1947

From French label Frémeaux & Associés, Choro 1906-1947 gives the listener a great overview of Choro, the Brazilian instrument music (an early relative to Samba). It's uplifting and bright. A joyous, feel-good music for the soul.

Sounds of the South: A Musical Journey From the Georgia Sea Islands to the Mississippi Delta

Along side Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, Sounds of the South is the most important compilation of American folk music ever compiled. Originally released in 1961, this set of field recordings was gathered by Alan Lomax during a single trip around America in 1959. It represents gospel (white & black), blues, country, folk/children songs, along with stories of the time. Overall, the album has a great narrative arch.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore: 1927-1948

The loveliest, most engrossing, and spectacular collection of songs compiled on one LP. Very western (American) leaning, though.

String of Pearls: International 78s

Exactly what the title suggests. One of the best collections of international songs you'll come across. A few of my absolute favorite songs reside on this collection. There's western and eastern music represented on here, too. From Arabic, Turkish, and Ukrainian folk music to Southeast Asian classical.

Jamaica-Mento 1951-1958

Much like the Choro collection above this compilation only represents one area or region of music. However, with that said, it's a phenomenal collection of sunshine tunes. A great record to cheer you up after a stressful day. And if you're familiar with Beetle Juice, you'll probably recognize the first tune.

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of: Super Rarities & Unissued Gems of the 1920s and 30s

The long lost cousin of Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. A great continuation of said work. Gospel to flatpicking country tunes are all represented here. Kentucky Ramblers' "Ginseng Blues" is one hell of a jam.

To What Strange Place: The Music of the Ottoman-American Diaspora, 1916-1929

If you're truly looking for alien sounds look no further than Tompkins Square's compilation To What Strange Place: The Music of the Ottoman-American Diaspora, 1916-1929. Mind you, the collection is expansive in scope and narrative. Only engage with this gnarly beast if you have the time and patience.
