Favourite artists?

  • Favourite artists?

Do you shine a torch for one artists in particular? Which ones? Why?

My all time favourite artist is Sarah Brightman, and she always will be. I love her diversity - each album is different; the concept is different and she mixes classics with the modern along with her own original material. Not to mention her concerts which are fantastic! I like her producer, Frank Peterson, too. He is responsible for Gregorian and I think they are wonderful. He also wrote Enigma's first hit 'Sadeness Pt One.' :)

Other classical artists I like are: Emma Shapplin, Hayley Westenra, Josh Groban, Russell Watson, Keedie, Becky Jane Taylor, Katherine Jenkins, Sissel and Cantamus to name a few. :)

    How about you guys?

  • Hayley Westenra is my favourite... her voice and music seletion leave nothing to be desired. I also like All Angels, Josh, Sarah, Becky, Sissel, and Katherine; and Calgary soprano Stefanie Rose. She's just in the stages of recording her demo album, but I know she'll be very successful! :)

  • I think I remember Stefanie... is the soprano that sang lyrics to 'A Window to the Past' from the Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack?

All Angels didn't leave a big enough impression on me with their debut, but they do have beautiful voices. I'll still buy their second album as I always give artists a second chance. :)

    All Angels.

  • Hi ya Sandra,

I bought All Angels CD when it first came out. I particularly like 'The Windmills of Your Mind'.

They have lovely voices. Not my favourite album though. I think they will get far, unlike other groups like themselves (Angelis, Choirboys etc)

  • Hi,

never heard of All Angels, but I'm still relatively new to the genre. My favourites are Josh Groban (the first I knew actually), Il Divo (been to a concert of them, awesome), Hayley Westenra (heard her on Lastfm and she was the supporting act of Il Divo), Charlotte Church and Andrea Bocelli (could you say he belongs here, I guess so. In that case I know him the longest).

  • Andrea Bocelli definitely belongs here!

Did I not put him in artist connections?

Andrea sings classical, then he sings pop. Hmm, Classical Crossover to me!

I don't really like him though. I mean, musically. I love Sarah Brightman, and after all the hype over him I eventually bought one his albums. I didn't like it. :(

I'm not a fan of Il Divo either, though I really like G4 (the british counterpart). Simon Cowell is somewhat responsible for them too (as they came from a series of X Factor, another version of Pop/American Idol).

Il Divo are brilliant singers, but they are a bit OTT for me. I don't know what it is exactly. G4 a little lighter, and the lead vocalist from G4 is fantastic.

  • Oh, but I love opera also, maybe that's why I like Andrea Bocelli and Il Divo more than you do. I don't know G4, maybe they are not so known outside the UK.
I listen almost to every kind of music, except really hard trance, the hard kinds of metal, hiphop and schlagers. But for the rest pretty much anything, although my favourite genres are jazz, country, (Dutch)pop, oldies (50's music) and of course classical crossover. I think you can see that in my profile as well.

  • Hmm, that's why I stated here only my favourites in this genre, otherwise it would be a odd (and very long) list for this group. So to keep it simple, I've said only my favourites in this genre.

Negative and Peter Gabriel also go in my top x

Peter Gabriel because of I was raised on his Real Life Tour, and Negative just cause of their sweet ballads :D

Also, I think Dutchpop is awful, as are "Nederrock" and "Nederrap"

The fact they put "neder" in front of it alone is enough reason ot despise it. Although, I did like a few songs. Golden Earring is great, and I like Kane's "Rain Down On Me" :D

I don't think I know any nederpop anyway... Well, unless you count Frans Bauer and other folk singers as pop... I suppose... We've always been great at making electronic music though, look at bands as 2 Unlimited, 1000000 hardcore and happy hardcore groups, van Buren, and Tiësto :P

  • I like opera, but only arias for sopranos. I don't know, the full blown tenor/baritone/bass voice is too much for me.

I like Nessun Dorma, but only if it's a soprano singing it (rare, I only know of two recordings by a soprano).

The canon soprano arias, like O Mio Babbino Caro, Un Bel Di Vedremo etc, I absolutely love. :)

G4 are exclusively in the UK. Classic FM is crazy for them though. They do arias (more than Il Divo!), original material and pop covers. A good balance. All Il Divo seem to do is change the language of a pop song and arrange it in an operatic manner.

Gouriel, thanks for the advice. I did what you said. I think it's scrobbling now. Well, it says something different (Couldn't Scrobble. Will try again later). Better than it was before! Lol!

  • Gouriel, I also think that many Dutch acts are not good, especially not the rapscene, perhaps maybe Brainpower, he has at leat lyrics that are a bit sensible. But I really like Boudewijn de Groot (not really pop I guess, more singer-songwriterish), Clouseau (Belgian/Flemish), Stef Bos (also singer-songwriter) and Guus Meeuwis. He has some songs that are for carnaval, but he has also many beautiful songs, especially since he's gone solo. And I wouldn't call Frans Bauer and such folk (that's also not my cup of tea), but schlagers/smartlappen. Hmm, maybe because I grew up with German music, but folk in my mind is different, but maybe that's because of the languagething. From the Dutch rockscene I like Kane, Golden Earring, Anouk (funny, all from the Hague).

Well, the term Nederpop is more for acts as Blof and such. Not bad, but not really good.

  • CareaLotClouds, hmm, I maybe like male voices in opera better than female, especcially when they sing very high. I don't know, some women can do that beautifully, but sometimes it's too much. And indeed my critism on Il Divo is that they just translate popsongs in Italian or something and sing it in an operatic way. But they have such beautiful voices that I can forgive them, lol.

I would like to check G4 out, it sounds very good to me. And maybe they get known outside the UK sometimes. (Not because of me though, it may sound like that, but
that's not in my power obviously, lol)

    Sarah Brightman
The only reason I joined this group :]

I'd be happy to get recommendations though.

  • I'd recommend any Sarah Brightman fan: Emma Shapplin, Keedie and Within Temptation.

The first experiments with classical like Sarah does, but she is completely experimental and sings her own compositions.

Keedie only has one album, but it's very much like Sarah's style since she sings pop, covers, original material and arias on one album.

Within Temptation are a light lady fronted symphonic band. I'd suggest you listen to 'Memories' for yur first listen.

but the first album of Within Temptation still have harsh male vocals in some musics.

My favorites are Emma Shapplin (where is she, by the way?), Libera, and the magnificent Andrea Bocelli :)

  • Oh, 'Enter' doesn't count. ;) I mean, I have the album but I never put it on. Much too heavy. The album 'The Silent Force' is very light by normal metal standards at least.

I have no idea where Emma is, which is upsetting as I love her immensely. She just is not the public type. I can't even tell when she is making music or not, there is never any news.

I have majority of Libera's albums. :) 'Vespera' is by far my favourite. I know they did a version with Aled Jones, but I still prefer their solo version.

  • I saw Nicky's album on the shelf today. If I hadn't just spent £60 on contact lenses and solution I would have bought it. :(

Yes, he used to be for her first album, but I think she gave him the boot after that. Don't know anything about the situation though. :)
