'American Beauty' is a 1999 drama film that explores themes of love, freedom, beauty, self-liberation, existentialism, the search for happiness, and family against the backdrop of modern American suburbia. The film was the screen debut for writer Alan Ball and director Sam Mendes and starred Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening; all four were nominated for Oscars. In 1999 it won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Lester Burnham (Spacey), a depressed suburban father in a mid-life crisis, decides to turn his hectic life around after developing an infatuation for his daughter's attractive friend.

Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure.

I've seen a lot of films the last two years and I've given this a lot of thought. I've also watched American beauty again and again. The conclusion: American Beauty is the best movie I've seen so far :)

I really love this movie, it's the best movie I've ever seen (but I've seen it too many times now^^). Lester Burnham is the most awesome movie character ever, I hope I'll be like him when I turn 40 ;)
