    excellent albums, nighttimebird and dr0nevil

  • Hmmm...five, hm? Let's see if I can do this again without Last.fm doubleposting it like it did last time...the forum seems to be misbehaving somewhat...

    1) Aphex Twin: "Selected Ambient Works Vol. II". DO try and find the missing "Track #19" if you don't have the Warp vinyl version. It's on an Astralwerks comp: "Excursions in Ambience: The Third Dimension". Of course, if you have an American pressing of "SAWII", you're missing not one but two tracks.

    2) Atom Heart: "DOTS: Music for Elevators". Wonderful, dub-inflected ambience that reminds me somewhat of some of Tetsu Inoue's work from around the same time (early-mid 90s). Which makes sense, given that they'd also collaborated. However, this is a harder to find thing, since it was only on the limited-run Rather Interesting label.

    3) Alvin Curran: "Songs and Views of the Magnetic Garden". From 1974, this is one of the unsung great works of early ambient music. Originally released on the difficult to find Italian Acanta label, it was later put out on CD by Catalyst. A very pretty, flowing soundscape, developed from live performances from the same period, after Curran's involvement with the seminal electroacoustic group MEV.

    4) Brian Eno: "On Land". Also rather unsung, being certainly overshadowed by "Music for Airports", this is a major component in what would grow to become 'dark ambient' music, plus it's also a startpoint for ambient works that evoke a sense of place/ambiance as opposed to the more 'traditional' (?) background sound purpose originally envisioned by Eno, Erik Satie, John Cage, etc.

    5) Terry Riley: "Shri Camel". Beautiful, crystalline microtonal organ works that evoke a strong Eastern sense, while at the same time merging ambient and trance elements. Not well-known as his "Rainbow in Curved Air", but it should be.

OK, that's my five. I could easily keep on going, but we'll keep things as per the topic...

    Aphex Twin-selected ambient 85 92

    are my current favourites

I'm quite new to this style of music, so I don't know as many ambient artists as i'd like. Recommendations are welcome ;)

    Sun Electric - 30.7.94

I've not heard this album before, but I know Kitchen and it's excellent (if a little dated). I'm guessing it's pretty hard to find these days?

Indeed, it is. There are three for sale at Discogs. Somewhat pricey though. This one on Ebay finished for 31 GBP. I guess it's not that far off.

I have an extra that I bought off of Amazon.de for 40 euros. Part of the cover and spine are sunbleached, and there's a couple of noticeable scratches, but it plays. I was a bit put off by the condition, but it was all I could find. I've since found one in better condition, so don't need this one.

It's a beautiful piece of music. By far my favorite CD. Way more ambient than Kitchen (which coincidentally is what introduced me to Sun Electric, and ultimately lead me to 30.7.94).

    Hi. Nice topic, nice lists.

I'm not going to limit myself to genre definitions. To me, they fall in the same category of atmospheric and 'free in form' electronic music, whatever label you want to put on it.

    1. Klaus Schulze - Mirage
    (fixed position)
    2. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon
    (fixed position)
Steve Roach - The Magnificent Void
    Michael Stearns - Planetary Unfolding
Brian Eno - Ambient 4: On Land

Mortiis - Født Til Å Herske

Mortiis used to play blackmetal in Emperor but quit the band to make Dark Ambient. now he only makes industrial

  • 1. Brian Eno- On Land
    2. Brian Eno/Harold Bud Ambient 2
    3. Biosphere Substrata
    4. Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient Works Vol.1
    5. Sigur Ros- Hlemmur

    Thomas Köner - Unerforschtes Gebiet*
Stars of the Lid - The Ballasted Orchestra
    Deathprod - Morals & Dogma
Bass Communion - Ghosts on Magnetic Tape
    Lustmord - Heresy

Not necessarily in order, just five which I could say I listen to a lot :)

(*could have filled all five spots with just Thomas Köner albums but that would have been boring. It was a toss-up between UG,Daikan,Teimo or Nuuk to get the mention but the track "Les Soeurs Lumiere" was the decider)

    By order,

    1. Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works vol.2
    2. Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music for Airports
    3. Brian Eno - Ambient 4: On Land
    4. Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

I am new to ambient music, so those are by far the only good ambient albums i can think of, and i don't even own half of those.
I am looking forward to buying some of Brian Eno's works.
