Your ideas for new community features

    Hi,

By request from some users, I am opening this thread. All ideas and feedback welcome! (around community features as the title says).

This does not mean that they will all be implemented, but at least you can be sure I will read them and try to participate as much as possible.

    Thanks,
    Julien.

    * The main one - more ways to pay if people want to subscribe. PayPal has too many limitations worldwide.

    * I'd like to see improvements to journals so they have more blog features - the ability to write and save without posting, so I can start one a few days earlier and keep adding to it till it's ready.

Alongside that, improvements to BBCode buttons, particularly access - it gets more and more difficult the longer the journal.

Improvements to editing so there isn't that moment of confusion when you've made a change to a long journal then can't find your place because suddenly you're not where you just were.

    * Editing posts in forums - we should stay with the post we just edited, not jump to the top of the page.

    * Playlists - need a major overhaul. Bit useless as they are. If we have the ability to move tracks around manually, the assumption is we can influence order of play. Half of that is half-baked. I imagine you're doing something with them already, so I wait to see!

    * Kill the players on our Profiles.

    * mass activity - i.e. mass love, mass ban, mass delete, mass tag etc. So a button top of each page in Recently Listened or our Libraries where we can tick all, then make whatever change we want to make with a dropdown list of options. Bit like how things are in the Inbox.

    * Talking of which! Filters in the Inbox - so we can view just messages or just recos or other shared items.

    * tag radios - songs are queued up 5 at a time, it's just that we can't see them. Can we see them? That's basically what We7 did, they opened up what can be seen so we can influence what plays next. If we can skip / ban before songs play, it will feel interactive even if it really isn't. Over at We7 (if you're interested!) you can see what's in the queue and you can also influence what plays next, you can leave it as it is or drag a song from anywhere on the site and add it to the queue. But that's probably extremely expensive, so a version of that would feel good without adding to streaming costs.

(I did wait for Tecfan, honest! Drummed my fingers and everything). : )

    Edited! I love my player!

Agree with everything else in the list.

The 'Community' section is a major missed opportunity at the moment. There's so much user-generated content that is going to waste, because people either can't search for it, or they don't know it's there. The example I always tend to quote is Playlist Search, along with a 'playlists containing this track' section on track pages.

But there's a whole lot of other cool user-produced stuff on the site - specialist tagged/themed content that is hard to stumble across. Some sort of way of 'featuring' these would be interesting. For instance, on the Xbox 360 app, there's a tab which contains some hardcoded shortcuts to games-related content (e.g. links to the 'video games' tag station, and the artist stations of some prominent soundtrack composers). It would be great to see similar on the website, e.g. some 'featured stations' for topical events. I guess a lot of this could form part of the role for the "Data Griot"!

Most of the rest of my community-related ideas have already been heavily posted before - e.g. a better mechanism for subscribing/unsubscribing from forum threads, a better mechanism for tracking your shouts/comments/wiki contributions.

Wow... and nobody mentioned "On demand plays yet... get them out of the beta!!
Or more precise, get them into beta, and make that beta accessible for human beings ;)
And for the rest... with the two above me ;)

On demands plays are not really a community feature though :D. But noted Jester :)

Am I the only one who favours get rid of them altogether? (except for 'free download' tracks, which are already clearly indicated anyway)

Given the obviously-complex licensing issues involved, and the confusion that the on-demand has introduced (e.g. "only 3 plays even if I'm a subscriber?", "how come I can listen to some tracks in full but not others", "if an entire album is available on-demand, why do I have to click on each track individually to listen to it", "why can I listen to individual tracks on-demand but 'Play Artist Radio' is still a mix of other artists?", etc...), and the competing on-demand offerings from other companies who are still burning through their startup cash, I personally would prefer Last.fm to position itself clearly as a radio service, rather than on-demand. At the moment it's doing a bit of both, and causing confusion for many users.

Of course, the alternative is to launch a full on-demand offering which is available to everyone everywhere. But I know which one is quicker and cheaper ;)

I know it would be a lot clearer in the communication if they were gone (including anything that even vaguely could be seen as) or if they were here.
The current situation is a joke, and has been so for far to long... I only took the option to play the devils advocate (living in the Netherlands, I doubt the option would be available for me anyways)

    </quote section>

I'm gonna copy the PM I sent to Thaelvyn, I know not everybody will agree with the notifications proposal..

I know it's a mess, I just wrote stuff as it popped up into my head ^^

First, thanks for the initiative! I appreciate it.

Second, I just want to mention what's wrong:
1: Lack of features to follow up your actions
    2: Lack of friend features
    3: Lack of notification options
    4: Groups are useless

I'm not gonna go into detail.. just gonna jump on some of my proposals:

Notifications. Yeah, I know Facebook has them too, but it's the single greatest feature that will keep people on the site. Oh, somebody answered on your forum post! Wow, somebody joined my group! Yey, my artist got a new shout! You see where I'm going? You have any idea how much work it is checking out all my 100 groups for discussion answers, shoutbox activity, join activity and article activity? And then checking out my artist(s), all of the albums and every single track for shouts, tags, loves and stuff? It's just not working, which is why we absolutely need notifications.

Of course, we also need a lot of settings and filters. Not gonna list them all.. it will be obvious.

Btw, great notification events: "you got a new top artist", "Artist X became the top artist of this week with y plays", "Your top 500 band X has released a new album, in case you didn't notice", etc..

2: friend features - goes under notifications. A friend loved a track? Notification (configurable, as mentioned).

So, we have a loved tracks feed, a recent friend tracks feed (not real-time :\) and an event feed. What about group joinings? Friendship alerts? New friend journals (I know this is in the recommended reading, which is beta)

about groups.. I've heard it some times from staff members when asked about "reply"/"discussion" features in artist shoutboxes (it's really hard to have a discussion): "make a group"... well.. groups are useless.

As I mentioned earlier, how are we supposed to keep updated on 100 groups? 200? 300? Impossible.

    So my suggestion:

A group dashboard. In fact, I'd like a totally new dashboard - but maybe a Facebook-like front page is not very wanted).

Anyway, a group activity overview page. New shouts, new discussions, new joins and leaves, description text updates, new articles, chart updates.. endless possibilities. Groups are where people really should connect, but instead most of them are used for games and some interesting, but short discussions..

    So yes. A short conclusion:
*Notifications (of everything - we're in 2010, people _LOVE_ updates, information and friends - those who does not can filter it out or turn it off)
    *Group dashboard

And of course, please, for heavens sake, repair our reply tracker, recommended reading, friend finder and much more)

  • A few ideas:

    • Strip shares out of the PM system, allow me to play 'em collectively, allow me to track received shares (including source) and submitted shares (including target).
    • Integrate target check when sharing (don't want to share something that target user already has, has banned, or already received in the past).
    • Allow API access to the messaging subsystem.
    • Allow API access to the sharing subsystem (specifically for retrieval of shares).
    • Implement shout tracking and add in API access for retrieval.
    • Provide API access to groups
    • Provide API access to journals
    • Fix playlists (eliminate 200 max, implement sorting) or add, at minimum, the ability to attach notes/desc to personal tags (icons would be helpful as well).
    • Allow me to view user's Radio history (if I see a cool stream of tracks on user x's recently listened list, would be nice to see how they found 'em (trip-hop tag radio, user y's loved tracks, etc.).
    • Provide the ability to bookmark users, outside the friends subsystem (private), and track the total number of tracks in my lib pulled from listening to each user's lib... more granular stats would be even cooler.
    • Provide lib compare feature that allows me to mine "x" number of user's libs for tracks, preferably steerable by tag.
    • Provide ability to play friends radio
    • Implement "find friends" so that thread may go away for good

    On-demand plays

    I say keep them.

I presume the rest of the world doesn't see 'full track' where we do?

If we had auto-advance back on albums, like they used to be before you had to start penny-pinching, it would be good.

What really is free and what isn't, what appears in Google search, what people see that leads to assumptions and expectations - this all needs tidying up.

If the on-demand 'beta experiment' were to ever go live, it would mean a higher subscription rate, which was the original idea posed by Warners but Last.fm dawdled over because they were trying to keep things free not fee. But the climate's changed now, people have got their heads around the idea of fee sites. So maybe it's time to launch £5 a month proper on-demand Subscriber+. I would be happy to go up a level for this, I know it's something I already use and would miss if I didn't have it. I would expect auto-advance on albums to be restored, though.

Maybe that could be the difference between subs and subs+. That subs+ get auto-advance and unlimited full plays for on-demand tracks. Regular subs would understand that to pay the standard rate would mean how things are now. ish. with a bit of tidying. So they still get the sense of supporting the site and getting what we have now without breaking the bank. I think it's important not to lose E£$3 level.

Assuming it's all do-able of course! Whatever is practical, etc etc.

I love Tecfan's Group Dashboard idea. I didn't know how much I needed it! +1 from me.

There was an idea someone had a long time ago re the Library - the ability to add notes and scribbles wherever we want. I still would like that if we could make it happen. I'll see if I can find the original thread... here http://www.last.fm/forum/21717/_/547223

Thanks for all those feedbacks guys. Noted and all!

As I mentioned in another post, 2010 will be an exciting year for last.fm and it's community. And I am confident that you will start seeing those changes soon-(ish). I will keep following this thread (obviously) and bring the ideas to the devs. This does not mean that everything you ask will be done, because there are some constraints of time / budget or even global idea of what Last.fm should be, but we will do as much as we can :)

I tend to agree with this. It wouldn't bother me if on demand where abolished. Looking at the features in the new client whenever that finally become available I'll be more then satisfied with the radio service.

They need to make a decision one way or another, either roll out the proper promised on demand service or remove it and go back to how things where.

Another unrelated request, finally bring out of beta the recommended reading and give it a box on the home page. In fact lets have more community features on the home page in general so people know about them and use them.

First, thanks for the post(s), thread, and feedback.

Setting expectations is important... accurate expectations lead to happy customers. With that in mind, I bolded something you stated I see as incredibly important, and I'd love one question to be answered: does Last.fm consider serving the purpose of system of record for a user's global library as key, and, in line, is data accuracy paramount to achieving that goal?

Not trying to back you into a corner on this one at all. The answer to that single question would set my own expectations completely and drive exactly what I do with the site, including whether or not I spend time writing external apps on top the API.

    Thanks again!

A friends request should allow an accompanying message instead of requiring a separate PM or Shout.

    reply tracking including shouts

subscribe and unsubscribe in the reply tracker

tracking of shares (has my friend listened to my recommendation yet?)

tracking of friend requests (was my friend request denied?, who have I outstanding friend requests with)

Allow changes of group leader, especially for leaderless groups [this last one must be moderator free so you need a mechanism like an electronic petition that requires a certain percentage of group members to sign to trigger a leadership contest.

New forum threads from one's groups should show up somewhere in Recommended Reading. I believe this would make the group fora much more useful and lively.

Upvote / Downvote / Report buttons on shoutboxes

As discussed incessantly in the topic "The amount of trolling, flaming and spamming on this website is amazing"

Shoutboxes (particularly for major artists) are an abomination at the moment. Spam is a big problem; sure, we can report individual users, but then that's a lot of work for moderators. On nearly every major website which allows user comments, there are +/- voting buttons, and a Report button to flag abuse. Last.fm is crying out for this (almost literally).

I would like to see a realtime newsfeed with updates from my friends about loved tracks, tagging activity, playlist activity, radios they are listening to, shouts they made somewhere, and so on. Perhaps coupled with a "Like" button and commenting possibilities.

Such newsfeeds are very common nowadays in social networks and they are important to stay in contact with all of your friends.

For those of us who make radios and playlists to share, I'd like some notification that someone is listening. Even if someone is just listening to my Library or Loved Tracks, I'd like to know.

I think Group Leaders need to be notified of pending applications to join.

I'd like to be able to click on a 'more' button and see a page of recent visitors. It's fine on slow days, 6 is more than enough, but on a busy one, 6 is nothing.

Library - list views! My perennial request. List views for everything!

i will not say anything new, but repeat what seems important.
there are two goals - make interesting content easier to find, and make easier and more pleasant to create your own.

    So
    - Import friends from Gmail and Twitter
    - Bring back recommended reading
    - [Un]subscribe in reply tracker
    - Improve journal. At least add Vimeo

A rating or thumb up system for journals. Then get mush better recommendated ones based on what your neighbours, friends and "people who like similar journals" liked. At the moment its hard to find anything else then those "my 1234th scrobble" or "my super top 100 tracks for today chart", but i know their are some very great album or event reviews wich i would like to see.

A vote up/down system on shoutboxes to hide all the spam and highlight good comments.
