PompeyHell: "I still think it's a fantastic festival, but a rethink is probably needed for next year." Couldn't agree more. The ratio of twats to non twats was amazingly high this year (my 9th Reading). Guess it's a sign that festivals are currently a 'trendy' thing to do for the current fashion conscious masses? Or maybe I'm just getting older ;)

Being front row at The Prodigy was probably the biggest mistake of the weekend. I've been to some rough gigs (Gallows, Lamb of God to name a couple) but I don't think I've ever feared for my life at a gig before. Absolutely mental but totally worth it. Kings of Leon's attitude and performance was disgraceful, but I didn't go in with high expectations knowing the direction their collective ego had gone. They watered down the classics and then complained over a rightfully less than impressed audience. Radiohead brought me to tears of sheer joy. I don't have the right words. Surprise hits: Municipal Waste, Friendly Fires, Jamie T, Plugs and The Teeth.

Also was anyone else really fucked off with the Dance stage? Deadmau5 started nearly an hour early and I, along with many others, missed most of the set.

    septembre 2009
  • Robsy

Surely Radiohead played Creep first to get it out the way and stop all the cunts shouting "PLAY CREEP!!!!!" and ruining the rest of the set? I just knew they'd play it first for that reason. They had the best set of the weekend for sure, the only downer was they didn't play Fake Plastic Trees. Other good shows were Frank Turner, Metric (who were bloody brilliant, actually) and Maximo Park was surprisingly good. Saturday had too much shit on main stage, Courneeners and Ian Brown were boring as fuck. And yeah, Kings of Leon were once again Class A wankers, they did nearly the exact same thing at Germany's Hurricane Festival back in June. I thought that was because of the notoriously quiet German crowd but obviously the band do it at every show.

anyone got any crowd photos of the people on the barrier on saturday, up until the end of enter shikari? i got lifted out at that point! :(

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00mgwv4/Reading_and_Leeds_Festival_2009_Radiohead/ shedloads more radiohead on there, about double the advertised coverage on BBC and what was shown on red button yesterday.

yeah when I eventually found other people, they were great fans - apart from that girl i mentioned in an earlier post. boomlights: couldn't agree more! - when you're headlining a festival, you have to expect people to know only one or two of your songs, even if you're a really big band because people have not paid their money to see you - they might like a few of your most famous songs and just want to check you out, yes, there's going to be die hard fans, but that's not what the entire crowd will be made up of. KoL should learn that they have to treat festivals differently from their own show. If they walked on stage and waved at everyone for half an hour in their own show people would probably love it, but at a festival, they actually need to do some work to engage the people who aren't massive fans because they are naturally going to be more unimpressed. :@

  • jrox05

@skistar123 did you notice that most bands fans spread out on either side (in a V shape), i was about 10 rows back, got the lightshow and was stood with loads of great fans on the left.

Mate watch them play The Bucket where noone is doing anything until the chorus it is seriously not even remotely hard to see why they're pissed off. And yeh yeh I stood at my tent, absolutely. No you mug I was not that far back and noone around me knew any of the words to anything. Libetines to headline would be the worst thing to ever happen to Reading and I know Libertines fans who agree with me on that.

  • timothy88

the lights were awesome from the front.. was also at the front in VP.. they were better this time round, played longer, better set list.

    septembre 2009
  • skistar123

Adabadang: haha :P and LittleJoell: yeah the OK/Kid split is definitely a problem, even though I love both! I was at the front for Victoria Park last year and it was mind blowing. The problem was, I couldn't see that spectacular lightshow they've got, so I thought "ooh for Reading, seeing as I've already seen Radiohead, I'm gonna stand back and enjoy the lights." However, I ended up feeling like a bit of an idiot dancing and singing at the back, so I forfeited the lightshow again to be in with a better crowd.

there was no need for what KOL did.. just cause it was windy, couldnt hear anythign and Caleb can't handle his drink. The crowd was nowhere near as bad as they say it was. i have seen KOL play 3 times this year.. and the reaction at reading was no different than any of the other times i saw them.. and yet they praised the crowed the other two times. Thier arrogant, immature reaction was a disgrace.. Claiming to everyone they had 'worked goddamn hard to get here'... If it wasn't for the people standing in front of you, you wouldn't fucking be there you cunts.. and then to give everyone the finger even though they had been waiting there hours in the freezing cold to watch one of there favourite bands play, only to have them hurl abuse at you for it... yea, caleb.. 'you are the goddamn king of leon... FUCK ALL OF YOU' arrogant pricks.

    septembre 2009

Just watched the KoL coverage back online and it's really easy to see why they got pissed off.

"Would have liked a bit more crowd participation for Radiohead - lots of people didn't seem to know any of their songs" Welcome to Reading

    septembre 2009
  • Pompeyhell

Reading lost it's direction this year, it's all very well having a diverse line-up but if you're not careful you end up being like V festival! If you've got Kaiser Chiefs that high up the bill, you're in trouble. I've no idea why KOL have become a headline act, I just don't think they're up to it, same goes for Arctic Monkeys. That was my 23rd Reading and it was easily the weakest main stage line-up since Mean Fiddler/Melvin Benn took over in 1989. Bands that got it right; Gaslight Anthem, Prodigy, Gallows, Frank Turner and Radiohead oh and Municipal Waste. As for the campsite trouble, it was always a bit lively camping at Reading, but since chindie knobheads started going to festivals, the atmosphere changed. Some people are not happy unless they are spoiling it for others, you shouldn't have to lie in your tent worrying if some tool is going to jump on or set fire to it. I still think it's a fantastic festival, but a rethink is probably needed for next year.

  • LittleJoeII

Yeah, you need to get to the front to really enjoy a Radiohead gig I've found. Their fanbase is so fractured along that OKC/KID A split that, if you stand a bit too far back, you get a very mixed response.

Would have liked a bit more crowd participation for Radiohead - lots of people didn't seem to know any of their songs (I sang all the words to every single song to make up for their apparent ignorance). Once I managed to get further towards the front, people seemed to be better fans and I felt at home haha! Shame there wasn't a bit more dancing - I didn't want a full on mosh pit, but it really hurt my feet standing in one place. When I saw them last year, everyone was dancing their arses off XD Still, Radiohead played an epic set, and they even gave Creep an outing which they don't do very much at festivals, let alone their own tours!

I heard about KoL when I got back to my camp saying that Marmaduke Duke were fucking insanely good and my mates saying they were complete dickheads and all I did was laugh and it reassured my decision to watch MD was justified

I had no idea what went on at Kings of Leon until the morning. Like most people here (other than those who didnt watch it) I was right at the back dancing my arse off and having a good time, thinking they were actually really good then he just threw his guitar down and ran off. It was only when the Reading logo came up on the screens I realised they weren't coming back. I heard someone on another stage was getting the crowd to say "fuck kings of leon" which was maybe why Caleb was asking for the sound up, to drown out those ignorant cunts. Ah well, they played a good enough set, maybe too much of the obvious and I seriously missed them playing King of the Rodeo but it was alright. It seems there's been a lot of complaints about Reading this year, which is strange, mainly about the crowd though.

thats what you all get for watching a shit over hyped bunch of twats like kol you can really see along with bloc party what an effort they make designing their merchandise, faith no more, municipal waste, a whilhelm scream, tgoat, the bronx, grammatics, gallows ect were awesome and chickenhawk were a nice suprise and did anyone else get annoyed at those 3 punk/chav/poser dicks in every pit thinking they were in braveheart or something

    septembre 2009
  • chrisORANGE

I have to also say that Caleb's hissy fit was unjustified. From where I was the crowd were lively and singing pretty much every word, so I don't know what he was complaining about. It gave a sour taste to what was a good set and I think he just pissed a lot of people off. Although I didn't mind AM playing a bit of new stuff, they should have played a livelier set, playing after The Prodigy they just got it all wrong. Them Crooked Vultures were a nice treat on the Saturday, really happy my prediction was true lol. :) Only complaint for Sat was that White Lies and Prodigy clashed. :( Radiohead were magical, definitely a wonderful experience seeing them. Overall a great festival but Kings have really pissed me off. -___-

Caleb from KoL was a total dick at Reading, there was no reason for him to be like that, KoL were playing well and most people seemed to be enjoying it - we were about as far back as you can get and were dancing and singin like there was no tomorrow, but for some reason, Caleb seemed to hate every minute of it. Shame because they played a really good set and were on pretty good form, apart from his mood.
