Fr., 27. Jun. – Graspop Metal Meeting 2008Freitag:

Erste Band des Tages warn für mich Behemoth die mit ihrem Geballer einen schönen Start in das Festival-Wochenende geliefert haben. Guter Sound, nette Setlist, unterm Strich einer der besten Gigs, die ich von Behemoth bisher gesehen habe.

Von Behemoth gings dann rüber in andere Zelt zu Moonspell. Moonspell hatte ich vorher noch nie Live gesehen und mit dem Material der Band bin ich auch nur oberflächlich vertraut, aber das wird sich in naher Zukunft ändern, denn was die Portugiesen hier abgeliefert haben, war schon erste Sahne, was vor allem dem charismatischen Frontmann zu danken ist. Nettes Schmankerl: Anneke von Giersbergen kam bei einem Titel zu einem Duett auf die Bühne. Hat Spass gemacht die Band, werd ich mir gerne nochmal geben.

Nach zwei Zelt-Gigs wurde es jetzt langsam Zeit, sich daran zu erinnern, dass wir ja eigentlich auf einem Open Air-Konzert sind: Und da zu diesem Zeitpunkt auch das Wetter dankenswerter Weise richtig…

Graspop 2008

Voor mij begon het op donderdag 26 juni al, een dag eerder dan het daadwerkelijke festival. Mede door de lange wachtrij van vorig jaar op de eerste festivaldag dacht ik om er goed aan te doen om een dag eerder te komen zodat ik de rij mis zou lopen. Helaas was ik niet de enige met deze gedachte, ik stond weer in dezelfde rij als het afgelopen jaar, maar nu pakweg 18 uur eerder.
Achteraf gezien was mijn keuze toch wel goed geweest om een dag eerder te gaan, nu kon ik tenminste fris aan het festival beginnen, zonder nog eerst op dezelfde dag een reis te hebben moeten maken.

Vrijdag 27 juni:

De eerste band die ik op de Vrijdag zag was het Belgische Dedicted, deze band klinkt op album een beetje als een wat zwaardere vorm van de Nederlandse Textures, metalcore dus, maar dan met een progressief randje. Toen de show begon was ik direct onder de indruk van de vocalen, wat een strot kon die vent openzetten zeg! Onder de indruk was ik echter niet lang…

Thu 26 Jun – GMM2008

When you have seen as much bands as me it's not easy to keep a festival interesting.
Don't get me wrong, the festival was fucking great, but if they don't come up with new bands I won't be going next year, I don't want to see In Flames for the 4th time or Obituary for the 3th time and so on...

Who am I kidding, I will probably go anyway lol.

Not really my cup of tea, but great music nonetheless.

Now this was something refreshing!
I absolutely wanted to see this band because they're stopping after this tour.
Industrial metal is not for everyone, but this was definitely a must see!

Friday
Tesla 5/10
Started off great with lost of solo's and Coming at you Live, but went downhill from there

The Lucifer Principle 6.5/10
Saw 2 or 3 songs and they were okay, too bad the sound quality was quite crappy

Saxon 9/10
Amazing, setlist and crowd-interaction were perfect. One of the best bands this year

Firewind 7.5/10
They played really well and the instrumental song blew me away, though their setlist could've been a lot better

Whitesnake 3/10
Utter crap, boring and a show for the mentally handicapped (the penis and "shagging" jokes, ugh). Worst band of the whole weekend imo

Judas Priest 9/10
Fucking amazing. Halford still rocks and the setlist was near-perfect (Sentinel should've been played). I had high hopes (except for singing) and they blew me away


Saturday
Sabaton 9.5/10
INCREDIBLE. The sound was a bit off in the beginning and the keys on Ghost Division and 40:1 were a bit weird, but they still were incredible. …

Just came back from Graspop, here's the review:

6:00 O'clock: I woke up a quarter too early, so I just started to get ready. By 6:30 I was on the road towards Belgium, 200 kilometers to go. Fortunately, I got there quickly because the roads were like empty :)

So at 8:30 I parked my car and had to walk for an hour with 20 kg's of stuff to find an empty spot at the camping. It was just packed with people. All kind of people btw, from 14 till 60 years old. The old ones all wear jackets with lots of Iron Maiden and Motorhead patches, the young ones just their favourite band shirts. Very cool to see! Also the tents itself were a mess. Many tents were decorated with flags and all kinds of bands were written on it. Between the tents and everewhere you could see were food rests and trash.

When I was done with my stuff, I went to the festival area. …

Fri 27 Jun – Graspop Metal Meeting 2008

De reden om voor de GMM-vrijdag te kiezen waren bands zoals TESTAMENT, WHITESNAKE en MINISTRY die aan hun laatste tour bezig zijn...

Iron Maiden, Novembers Doom en nog enkele bands, hadden ook een motivatie kunnen zijn om ook de andere dagen te gaan, maar mijn weekendplanning zag er nu eenmaal anders uit..


Van SYMPHONY X heb ik, jammer genoeg, maar enkel het laatste stuk gezien, wegens pas rond die tijd gearriveerd. Maar wat ik zag klonk alvast véél beter dan toen ik ze zag als voorprogramma van Dream Theater in de Lotto Arena. Toen was het voor mij een echte tegenvaller, nu klonk het echt wel goed...Toch hetgene ik er nog van kon meemaken alleszins.


DEF LEPPARD speelde ongeveer, of ik denk zelfs volledig, dezelfde set als op ARROW ROCK,. En ik vond het deze keer beter meevallen dan op Arrow. Al kan ik niet zeggen dat het echt goed was. Maar, Elliott bleek iets beter bij stem te zijn, maar het was toch al bij een vrij matte vertoning. …

Graspop starts in only 3 days! Time to think about the bands I am going to see, the ones that make me mad because I will not see them, and possibly about the rest too.
And if you happen to see my profile picture (Old School) on a T-shirt, come and say hello to the guy who wears it (in whatever language you want; English, French & Dutch speakers are assured to have a reply in a more or less correct form of their own language). I might even buy you a beer! ;-)

Friday
Kick-off at 2pm. With luck I will have arrived, unpacked my stuff and entered the festival site by then, just in time to see Tesla. Their Mechanical Resonance album is still one of my favourite albums of the late 1980s, so I hope I will not miss them. And as the crowd may not be too thick at the time, I may even try and join the front row, something I've never done so far in the previous 6 editions of the Graspop I've been to.

2.50 and my ears will already start hurting as the mighty Behemoth open the show in Marquee 2. …

15:35 - 16:25: Yngwie Malmsteen is up next. It's a really cool Guitarist + Tim Ripper Owens on vocals!!

17:15 - 18:10: Saxon, does this band need more info ?

18:10 - 18:40 Damn Your Idols, some awesom rock from Belgium!!

19:20 - 20:00 Firewind, sorry Def Leppard, but Power Metal is just better! GUS G!!!

Maybe 20:15 - 21:10 Testament in between, cause there latest album is really awesome

21:10 - 22:35 Whitesnake

15:40 - 16:20 Alestorm !! Really awesome band, need to check them out!!

17:00 - 17:55 Sonata Arctica Their world tour was sold out in belgium, sow my second chance!!
