Wed 20 Aug – Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz

It’s rather amusing that anytime Ian Matthias Bavitz, aka Aesop Rock is on YouTube or on stage, he appears to have just rolled out of bed. This appearance makes sense of his lyrics like, ‘I show up late looking project grizzly,’ but it doesn’t give a good indication of what his performances will be like. Despite his sometimes inaccessibly Dadaistic lyrics and incomprehensibly fast flows Aesop Rock brought the crowd at DC’s 9:30 club to frenzied levels of energy last night (even more than earlier this year at Coachella).

With the energy Rock and his partners in crime, Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz emanated, the crowd was able to amp the performance of the Def Jux crew with shear excitement and well…wylin’ out. It’s this exchange of enthusiasm that separates the good hip-hop shows from the average and Aesop Rock and co. were definitely above par. That is not to say, however, the performance was without its flaws.

Thu 12 Jun – Jamie Lidell

If I was a woman, or just wore panties for some reason last night, I would have thrown them at Jamie Lidell. He is ready to headline stadiums. He could easily headline giant festivals too. And probably power all of London.

Not only did Jamie Lidell get the crowd to dance beyond exhaustion and fatigue, he got us to sing our ever-lovin' hearts out right from our throats and diaphragms collectively. Not only did the band with him perform with the best musicianship I've seen since Roger Waters performed Dark Side of the Moon and more this year at Coachella, they played with the best showmanship since I saw Beck play Sasquatch in '06.* Not only did Jamie catch me off-guard when he composed the type of dance music I hoped to hear live with his voice, laptops and keyboard (the likes of which I haven't encountered before), he sang better than I expected him to sing (and I had some high expectations).

The man sang "Game for Fools" (a big highlight that…

Fri 25 Apr – Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

    http://nikgomez.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/portishead3.jpg

Heading back to the polo fields after an exhausting Friday, we knew that we’d be in for a treat on Saturday. From my standpoint (and that of many others) it was the strongest day by far. After the peanut butter sandwiches and water-bottles were loaded into the backpacks and the sunscreen amply applied, we trekked back to the pat-down lines and started Coachella Day 2. Here are the links to the different shows we saw on Saturday: Institubes (Orgasmic, Curses, Para One, Surkin), The Teenagers, Uffie feat. DJ Mehdi, Dredg, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, Hot Chip, Kraftwerk, Portishead, Prince.

  • Coachella '08: Day 1

Fri 25 Apr – Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

    http://nikgomez.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/nightsky.jpg

Coachella 2008 has come and gone, and it was amazing. Two (our trip was cut short) hot days in the desert and plenty of good music later, here's my rundown of the artists I saw on Friday. I hope my reviews can give you insight onto how great live music is. The artists that I checked out on Friday (Day 1) were: Battles, Dan Deacon, The Breeders, Vampire Weekend, Diplo, Pendulum, Aphex Twin, Fatboy Slim.

  • exhaustive mad rush through three days of majesty from speakers

Fri 25 Apr – Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

Diplo easily performed the best electronic set of the festival until Modeselektor obliterated the Sahara tent on Sunday night. It was hilarious to see so many people walk out during Aphex Twin looking abused and indignant. Fatboy Slim is a giant nerd who obviously loves thrusting his hips to music second only to music itself. Danny Tenaglia was there to confuse us (as he sang to the crowd to the beat of his fantastic house music) as much as to rock the joint. However, his closing track (a remix of REM's Losing My Religion) was a complete disappointment. His contemporary, Dmitry from Paris actually did a much better job, i.m.o. On a different side of the edm coin, Boys Noize played an absolutely furious set of filthy electro. Thank g-d Adam Freeland played We Want Your Soul.

M.I.A. was 20 or so minutes late, which wouldn't have been so obnoxious if she hadn't spent 15 minutes of her set yelling at the tech people. Metric also seemed to have some disruptive technical issues. …

  • My Coachella 2008

    2 mai 2008, 21h25m par bboysgirl

Fri 25 Apr – Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

My experience at the Coachella Music Festival was really fun this year. I enjoyed myself more this year than I did last year. It wasn’t as horribly hot as 2007 (but still very hot), the people who attended this year were much mellower and kinder than the group of people who attended in 2007, and I saw more artists than I did last year.

    Whom I saw…

    Friday

DJ Mehdi: His set was a great way to begin the festival, with lots o’ dance grooves. Mehdi smiled and had fun. So did I.

American Bang: This band is my Coachella find for 2008. I walked by the Mojave tent, where they were playing, to get some water and heard them. Their music drew me into the tent, and I ended up staying to listen to the last half of their set. They play Southern-styled rock. They reminded me of Kings of Leon, whom I like. I will be investigating their music further.

Midnight Juggernauts: This was my first proper set of the festival (i.e., watched from beginning to end). …

  • Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival @ Empire Polo Field, Indio, California…

    1 mai 2008, 20h42m par Psicosis

Horse shit. If there was any one smell that could describe the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, it would be horse shit. As soon as you parked your car the stench hit you and it followed you along until you got to the gates. Once you had security pat you up and down and you had your ticket scanned, the smell faded away; only because your other senses lit up.

Swarms of people rushing past the palm trees onto the lush green fields of the Empire Polo Field occupy your eyes while a feast of various noises travel through your ears. It’s easy to say that Coachella is just another music festival, one of many taking place over the upcoming American summer. But Coachella has something unique, beyond the diverse number of musicians featured on the weekend’s bill and the unique art works displayed around the grounds. It’s the Coachella experience – and it’s something that can’t be transported outside of Indio.

It starts out with the drive. …
