  • Top 10 Most Memorable Concerts Of 2008: Globetrotter's Edition

    2 jan. 2009, 4h57m par parnissia

    http://blog.muchmusic.com/archives/images/grizzlybearlollapaloozajeremyfarmer.jpg

In 2008 I managed to haul my ass to just 89 shows - that's five fewer than in 2007 (94 shows), and eleven short of the 100 I saw in 2005. I suppose that means I've slowed down a bit - but have I really? These 89 rockouts spanned multiple provinces, states and continents and include seven (!) festivals, most of which I travelled for. In fact, I did so much music-related travelling in 2008 that I couldn't possibly limit my favourite shows to Toronto only. Please enjoy my list of most memorable live performances that took place over the past twelve months!

    10. The Veils @ La Sala Rossa (Pop Montreal, October 5)
In early October I travelled to Montreal for Pop Montreal, where I managed to take in several dozen acts in a span of just four days. Among these acts was a fluke addition to my schedule, The Veils & Dirty On Purpose at La Sala Rossa (which has quickly become my favourite Montreal venue - it…

    Albums of the Year
    10. Tobacco - Fucked Up Friends
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61u5CnCkmBL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Takes the Black Moth Super Rainbow formula to the next level. I challenge you to listen to this without bobbing your head and tapping your feet.

    Best Song: Hairy Candy

    9. We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FYM-ZlaGL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Never understood why this album was seemingly hated compared to With Love And Squalor or at least thrown into the stereotypical bad mainstream sophomore album ideology. This album is full of many great tracks, especially the Daft Punk-sampled Chick Lit and the new-wave influenced Lethal Enforcer.

    Best Song: Chick Lit

    8. Late of the Pier - Fantasy Black Channel

It took me many listens to "get" this band...to understand just how freaking cool this music was. …

  • Lollapalooza 2008 - Day 3

    4 sept. 2008, 22h32m par jm2soccer

    Fri 1 Aug – Lollapalooza 2008

Saturday August 3 - Day 3 at Lollapalooza

    The Blakes:
I have listened to this band a couple of times and they are pretty good. The show was one of the more typical morning bands with some energy and some stage presence but not too much. I liked the music and they sounded pretty good. Not much more to say but a decent show.

    The Whigs:
After missing these guys twice, I was really excited to finally see them. They were rocking on stage and keep the crowd entertained through out the show. They sounded good live and put on the typical good rock show. There was some talking to the crowd but for the most part just good old rocking. Overall I was very pleased with these guys and I am excited to see these guys again soon.

    Nicole Atkins and the Sea:
I sat in the shade for this one for the most part and as I did not know too much. The music sounded good and Nicole interacted with the crowd very well. She knew exactly what to say. …

  • Lollapalooza 2008 - Day 2

    27 août 2008, 22h27m par jm2soccer

    Fri 1 Aug – Lollapalooza 2008

Saturday August 2 - Day 2 at Lollapalooza

Margot & The Nuclear So And So's:
I did not know anything about this band before seeing them but they ended up being pretty good. They put on a pretty good live show. They had a decent stage performance and the music sounded good. After seeing the show, I am definitely going to have to listen to their cd.

    The Ting Tings:
I was quite excited for this show after getting their album from a friend and seeing them on Conan a couple nights earlier. The Ting Tings started off with We Walk which is one of my favorite songs from their album. From the very beginning Katie White was moving around and put on a very good stage performance. Not only did White do a good job but Jules De Martino did the best he could being limited to the drum set. The concert was early in the morning so there was not much dancing but I did see some which is what I would expect during this concert. …

  • Lollapalooza 2008 - Day 1

    12 août 2008, 4h40m par jm2soccer

    Fri 1 Aug – Lollapalooza 2008

Friday August 1 - Day 1 at Lollapalooza

    Black Lips:
These guys were my first band of the festival and they started it off well. I did not know too much as I had only gotten to listen to them once before seeing them. I thought these guys put on a good show. The band was very energetic and were moving around the stage a lot. The music sounded good too. I left these guys early but one of my friends informed me that the band kissed each other on stage. From what I saw this was a good show probably would have been better at night.

    Manchester Orchestra:
I was excited for this band after receiving this album from a friend awhile back. They did not do much on stage but the music was right on cue and the lead singer was great. There was a little more screaming during the show then on the cd, I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child, but it was put to good use. Overall this was a good show with high hopes for the future.

    The Enemy:

    Fri 1 Aug – Lollapalooza 2008

this is mostly written so i can remember what happened. and if anybody can get any entertainment out of this...

    Friday:
Ended up alone for the first 2 or 3 hours... Drag.
    Mates of State
i was able to slither my way to the very near front just by getting in from the side instead of making my journey from the back. I noticed that the mates were playing in basically every major festival in the US. My original thoughts: "overrated repetitive organ duo... used to like them". But seeing them live made me appreciate them again! I only recognized the song Ha Ha , which was excellent! Surprisingly great music.

    The Black Keys
I wasn't really a fan i the first place- they just seem fitting to smoke to is all i think about them. Didn't get a great spot, but i didn't really care to. Good riddance- their performance was average at best.

    VHS Or Beta
I'm not big into DJs. I finally met up with people to talk to, so it wasn't painfully boring. …

  • Lollapalooza Recap

    6 août 2008, 3h24m par HiroAntagonist

This note is a not so brief description of my amazing weekend in Chicago at Lollapalooza. I tried to cover all the bands I saw both for myself and for others who've asked for recaps. The list is in chronological order and if you read nothing else read the section about Rage, the best set of the weekend. Feel free to comment on this it'll be on facebook and last.fm.

    Friday

    Yeasayer
    - We finally got into the park after an hour's wait in line and only caught the last bit of Yeasayer's set. Their sounded surprisingly well outdoors and they have a good reception from the crowd, but I didn't see enough to make a good review.

The Kills- While wasting time before Gogol we saw an interesting two piece band putting out some guitar driven pop songs that almost sound like Top 40 girl pop with a tinge of blues or muddy guitar sounds. Some songs were better than others, but not the biggest fan.

Gogol Bordello- This was a set I had expectations for but they exceeded them. …
