Sat 15 Sep – Treasure Island Music Festival

My friend and I arrived on Treasure Island at a little before 3, so the first act we were able to see was M. Ward. He played "Chinese Translation" and "Helicopter", which were both highlights. He employed two drummers for the show and each added nice energy to the whole performance.

I had never seen (or even heard a lot from) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but I could tell they were just there to rock their little hearts out which made me enjoy them quite a bit. The audience was really receptive, dancing and clapping along the whole time. Lots of fun.

Built To Spill was the band that I was most excited to see and they were all I could have hoped for. They played: Liar, Time Trap, You Were Right, Stab, Strange, a Brian Eno song I don't know the title of, Car, and Conventional Wisdom. "Strange" was a nice treat from "Ancient Melodies Of The Future" and shortly after…

We left the house around 9 AM on Sunday, drove across the Golden Gate, and pulled up to the AT&T Park parking lot A in order to wait for the shuttle. They were putting up gigantic signs with a laundry list of banned items...the obvious such as alcohol and video cameras. But also, cameras (they meant professional cameras but didn't really clarify, so I walked back and forth a few times returning my camera to the car and then retrieving it), and lawn furniture, and they said, "There is grass to sit on." We were about 5th in line, but decided to go walk to Borders for a bit first, and ended up being probably 200th in line. A bit after 11:30, we boarded a bus to Treasure Island. It was a nice ride across the bay bridge.

We wandered around the booths. Bought some pins, and played eco-conscious carnival games. Griped about alcohol costing 7 to 9 dollars a cup!!!!! Eventually, paid it, since there was no re-entry. Decided that wine would be the most cost effective. …

while day one was mostly devoted to electronica (more or less) day two was mostly indie. the boys really REALLY like their indie, so we got a head start on things. we pulled into the parking lot by 1p this time and were on the island by 130p.

we showed up in between sets for stages and did some pokeing around before we bothered to so wade into the crowd for the nights fun. the first group we saw was M.Ward, they were passable, nothing special though.

we went back out and got food, hanging out listening to Sea Wolf from the concorse and then chilled in front of the ferris wheel-

for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. we went back up to the main stage for Built To Spill and had a ball watching them. even modest mouse came out to watch them from the side.

sadly, Spoon seemed a bit off, still a good set, but not as good as one would expect. some beats were off, some chords were off, but the energy was good, so hey. …

i was happy to see that the website had a schedule posted ahead of time and they were able to keep it rather well, even with alternating stages. we headed off across the bay around 2p or so, made it to the parking lot at AT&T before 3 and we were able to get a bit of partying in at the parking lot. we made our way to the shuttel and hopped right on, wisked away to treasure island to play for the day.

we arrived in the middle of DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, they were putting on an awesome set. we stayed in the think of it for Gotan Project and was pleasently surprised. i've heard of this group a few times, but never sat down to listen and i was blown away. the visuals on the screen were awesome to watch too. very moving, i don't think a single person was standing still during their set.
