“Spark and colour were everywhere. The little touches made this tiny festival glorious.”
The Guardian

Like a lot of festival goers we had always joked around saying « wouldn’t it be nice to put on our own ‘perfect’ festival with our favourite line up ». It was only after having been to a small and intimate festival in 2005 that Simon thought to himself that we can actually make this happen and put on our own quality festival. Simon teamed up with his friend Sofia, and the kind of festival they set out to create was one where:

You won’t get all the over hyped bands headlining
Most bands play longer sets than usual
You can eat a range of quality food
You can drink a range of quality beers
The staff and security care about everyone and show respect
The crowd will be there for the MUSIC
We take pride in being an independent festival.

The idea with the End of the Road Festival was to organise an intimate festival with our favourite artists and to create a festival with a friendly and relaxed feel.

The Larmer Tree Gardens (North Dorset/Wiltshire borders, UK) is the perfect venue to create this kind of atmosphere - where music-loving, open minded and chilled out people get together in the beautiful countryside whilst parrots and peacocks wander around!

This is the kind of festival where the ENTIRE line-up is the headliner in itself!

End of the Road festival takes a lot of pride in all the ‘little things’ that make a great festival, such as good food (organic and local where possible), good beer, caring and well-mannered staff, good site decorations, hygiene etc.

We encourage band participation in all areas of the festival, and some acts will be invited to dj, present workshops and many other things besides. The festival has the kind of atmosphere which encourages collaboration and ‘special’ events - in previous years we’ve seen acts such as I’m from Barcelona, Ed Harcourt, Josh Ritter, Herman Dune, Frida Hyvonen and Darrren Hayman all playing surprise sets in and around the festival site, as well as a few unexpected collaborations (thank you Ryan Adams who picked up the drum sticks for Jolie Holland’s set, and the Brakes/Seapower/Soft Parade boys).

As one of the festival organisers is Swedish, there will also be a slight Scandinavian touch to the festival with the old Viking game Kubb that all festival goers are welcome to try out, as well as a Scandinavian showcase of up and coming Nordic talent.

We had a great time. Lanterns on the Lake were fab. So too allo' darlin. But why do people just stand in front of you and shout at each other throughout the sets? Show some respect!

No Jerk Chicken .'. Racist festival. They even bullied some poor Tibetans into serving stew.

Amazing festival. Saw some great acts (Mogwai, Tinariwen, Midlake, JY) and discovered plenty of new stuff. That Phosphorescent song with the loop pedal was mind-blowing.

Best sets for me were the bands who seemed (rather than said) to be most enjoying being there: Allo Darlin', Diagrams and The Leisure Society spring to mind. Seeing Beirut also a high point. James Yorkston covering Donna Summer in a Tipi guest slot on Saturday was hilarious. Pity about the back pain that meant most standing gigs were agony though :(
