Sat 29 May – Sasquatch! Music Festival 2010

Sasquatch this year seemed to have been as if someone played the music lottery and won.

The line up was ridiculously good, as anyone seeing the list of bands can tell.
While some were a little out of key ( I expected more out of Kid Cudi and She & Him really), most others were hands down fantastic (Local Natives, Dr. Dog, Fruit Bats, and others).

Super Con : That awful first day cattle wrangle smoke congested dumbasses wasted at 1pm line waiting. We missed Fool's Gold because we were there trying to figure out what the hell was going on for about an hour. It was sort of figured out the following days, my recommendation? Get there early even if who you want to see isn't there until 4...

Con : So much cigarette smoke in such small crowds. I feel second hand lung cancer edging in as I type...

Pro : Most of everyone seemed to be really in the mood to have a really good time, the Gorge hill dance parties were amazing to witness and participate in.

  • Sasquatch! 2010: YEAH, MEH, BLEH

Upon reflection of my second Sasquatch experience, I can now say that this is officially my all-time favorite music festival. Despite facing an astounding amount of cigarette smoke (sadly watching the butts subsequently rival the amount of grass at the stunning Gorge Amphitheatre), crappy food, insane lines, pee-related incidents, and the embarrassment of seeing Canadian flags consistently waved by the craziest and drunkest of my fellow countrymen, the crowd that gathers there is second to none. It is a testament to the quality of their overall character that the vibe for such a huge festival remains so happy, mellow, and stoked on music. Plus, from where I'm sitting, the lineup just seems to get better every year. There really is nothing else quite like this little piece of heaven.

  • Sasquatch!2010 Revisted

Sat 29 May – Sasquatch! Music Festival 2010

Last.fm says that I have 99% compatibility with this festival so good thing I went!

This is a review but it is also a re-experience. I am going to go thru the festival as I saw it, thru my eyes and the video cameras of the lovely people that have posted their videos on youtube.

    SATURDAY

Fell asleep when the sun was coming up and woke up a few hours later. Waited in a long ass line to get into the venue, but at least Portland's own All The Apparatus was playing for the folks who were waiting. They were really good and even covered Nantes which was the perfect song for a beautiful sunny day in the Gorge.

Brother Ali was the first act we caught. He was fun, played a lot of songs of The Undisputed Truth which is a really great record. DJ Snuggles blew everyone away with his beatboxing skillz.

We scooted up front for Minus the Bear. The sound was really good, spot on.

  • 2010 Samsquanch Highlights

Sat 29 May – Sasquatch! Music Festival 2010

Just got back from Sasquatch, highlights were

    Day 1:

Standing with the press for Portugal. The Man

Broken Social Scene, The National, Vampire Weekend and My Morning Jacket playing back to back to etc, to close out the main stage on the first night

    Day 2:

Listening to Morning Teleportation for the first time, their album couldn't be out soon enough...

Standing 5 ft away from Local Natives, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, The XX and Girls on the 2nd day, Scoring an intact drum stick from the drummer of Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band....

EDIT: due to a lapse in any brain function, i got city and colour confused with Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. sorry for the confusion

LCD Soundsystem geting the whole place dancing to All My Friends...

Pavement taking 15 minutes to get through the "sound problems" and settling down into Rattled by the Rush, and the rest of the set that segued into Massive Attack's breathtaking finale to the 2nd day...

Sat 29 May – Sasquatch! Music Festival 2010

    Saturday

Mumford and Sons - awesome. Hadn't gotten into them till about a week before the festival, thanks to a buddy. Great band. Played with tons of energy.

Portugal. The Man - Solid show. Rock music.

Edward Sharpe - So much fun. Like Mumford, they played with tons of energy and had a blast on stage. Really sweet crowd here, too.

Broken Social Scene - What a fucking snooze.

The National - Sound was really off for the first couple of songs, but once it got dialed in, holy shit! These guys played a really really incredible show, the best of Day 1.

Vampire Weekend - Only stayed for about half of the show, but it was fun dancing on the lawn. Not a huge fan of VM, but for what it was they did great.

    Sunday

Local Natives - So drunk I barely remember this. I remember liking the music.

The Tallest Man On Earth - Not really appropriate for the festival setting if you ask me, but he played well. Just kinda boring.

Sat 29 May – Sasquatch! Music Festival 2010

The first three bands I saw were Caribou, Local Natives and They Might Be Giants. I can't say much about them other than they were good, in Caribou's and TMBG's cases because the mainstage was so far away, and in Local Natives' case because the crowd was so tall that I couldn't see anythin. It felt really, really impersonal. I suppose it's just a matter of taste, but after Sasquatch! I realize that I personally won't love a show if I can't see the band clearly. It just takes a certain something away from the performance.

So after TMBG I decided to get to the Bigfoot stage one show before the xx played, because thanks to the scheduling site I knew that a shitload of people would be going to see them, making it hard to get close enough to actually watch the band. When I got there, a band called Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band (I didn't know the name when I saw them) just finished setting up.
