lonely_minotaur Here you go, my crappy review/writeup thing as per usual: http://www.nothingatall.net/feature.php?what=featureView&item=32 And yes, yes Harmony Rockers were veryVERY fucking good indeed
décembre 2009 -
mankymusic harmony rockets were very good indeed, highlight has to be robin guthy, dirty three also
décembre 2009 -
ameliedelarge Swervedriver was really good! They even played 'Motor Away' from Guided by Voices!
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery Fucked Up were brilliant!! My first time in a mosh pit since I was about 17! Kevin and Bobby Gillespie were hanging out at J Mascis's gig tonight...no rest for the wicked and a nice little throwback to help the post-ATP blues!
décembre 2009 -
pepecasablancas Loved: Sonic Youth, being ear-raped by MBV on Sunday, Lightning Bolt, Dirty Three, múm, De La Soul, my cozy bedroom, pancakes, beer for breakfast. Hated: Yo La Tengo, Ssferfdriver or what was it, Somerset public buses. Thank you ATP, I'm so coming back next year!
décembre 2009 -
digweed7 Saw MBV on the Friday and the Sunday. That with Lightning Bolt on the Saturday was def the highlights.
décembre 2009 -
vokx Harmony Rockets SLAYED!
décembre 2009 -
BigSoftPunch I was too fucked up to see them :(
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr Fucked Up were quite good fun, yeah.
décembre 2009 -
burialchamber Did Fucked Up put in a good set, or were you all in bed farting?
décembre 2009 -
buckar00 Not so easy cooking in a room only chalet....
décembre 2009 -
BigSoftPunch I doubt Butlins would allow stalls to come in for the weekend, driving people not to go to the permanent places who probably pay a huge wedge to have their restaurants there, just cook at your chalets!
décembre 2009 -
t3dium SeanCr, Spectrum ended his set with Suicide, yes.
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts Okay, wagamama was a bit far-fetched but i thought they liked their chains... Yes, bf and I were discussing fact ATP should make a deal to install some stalls as alternatives for the weekends ATP is one... surely possible?
décembre 2009 -
StreetUrchin They could definitely have food stalls or something. I doubt the installation of a Wagamama would really be viable as there's probably only demand for a greater variety of food for about ten days each year! Honey Buzzard was good, I thought, and Exmoor Gold is pretty reliable. .
décembre 2009 -
buckar00 Not surprised the Albatross fucked you up - its 6.5%. I was on the New Harvest and 25th Anniversary all weekend; very nice they were too. I think there is a direct correlation between the windypops and the broader availability of real ale. It was good to see more stalls selling decent beer. I too wish that there was better food on offer, I can't see Butlins having a Wagamama's but there could be stalls outside selling alternatives.....
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts And what was with The Sun and Moon taking away earlybird?????
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts Albatross was amazing- tasted like flowers and fucked me up. Pretty sure they played Sueisfine at Bestival... and maybe Soft as Snow but my memories are murky... The set def wasn't the same though... Or maybe I wasn't... Antler wasn't very nice and didn't attempt Beast. The excessive methane production was possibly something to do with the appalling selection of food on offer... Maybe Butlins should consider reducing their carbon footprint by installing a wagamama or something to replace all the fried food...?
décembre 2009 -
StreetUrchin Antler, Albatross and Beast were all pretty strong, both in terms of alcohol content and flavour. (When You Wake Up) was also dropped from the set and Honey Power was added. Apparently they hadn't played HP since the ICA gigs. Which surprises me as I thought it was one of the highlights at the ICA. .Oh, and maybe KS thought it would essentially be a different crowd each night?!
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery Was it just me or was the beer ridiculously weak?
décembre 2009 -
mrdanielsir yeah WHY DID EVERYONE FART CONSTANTLY?
décembre 2009 -
hamishwright Blown a Wish and Suesfine were in the Roundhouse sets I saw, seemed like a direct swap for Sometimes and Honey Power at ATP. Spectrum doing Revolution was a-mazing
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr True, there was a lot of rancid gas going around.
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr How did Spectrum finish? I had to leave for Sonic Youth, which was a heartbreaking decision. Did they finish with Suicide?
décembre 2009 -
pokadoo2000 Highlights for me were MBV (obviously), Th' Faith Healers, Dirty Three, Sonic Youth, Robin Guthrie, J Mascis, Bob Mould & Spectrum.
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr Maybe its because I stood right next to the PA at Barrowlands (and stayed further back at ATP) but I thought the overall sound was better in Glasgow. The ATP sound was very bass-heavy and murky at times. For the record, I'm just being hyper-critical here because I expect a lot from MBV; I still think the ATP shows were great.
décembre 2009 -
pokadoo2000 nancykitten, agree about Barrowlands seeming louder. Although you could hear the actual songs a lot clearer at ATP. Could barely make them out at Barrowlands, although it was still awesome.
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr ...and I do accept that Sometimes was new and interesting to hear live, but this event was the opportunity to do so much more.
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr Yeah, I'm not talking about making a set different by switching Cigarette out for Lose My Breath every other night - I mean performing something that isn't the same bunch of songs from IA, Loveless, YMMR or Tremelo. Even if they're not going to do anything new, something different and a bit ambitious (Glider live?) would be nice for a change.
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery What was different about the set at Bestival? Significantly different or just the one or two track alteration that was mentioned earlier? I think they should start playing We're So Beautiful again...it's at least as good as Thorn and wouldn't sound of out place at all.
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts Mmm, I'd give 'em another shot but then was only my third time...
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery I agree with Sean. If they announced more gigs tomorrow I doubt I'd buy a ticket. I've now seen them play 98% identical sets 8 times in the last 18 months and that's enough of this format for me.
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts They played a different set at Bestival last year... Which other gigs did they play this set at? I was disappointed they played the same set every night actually- was expecting better of Kev and co. Post ATP depression/ flu is really shit : (
décembre 2009 -
SeanCr I honestly don't think MBV will ever release or perform new material at this stage. This event was the best possible opportunity to try it, with their own sound that they had plenty of time to set up and three gigs to get used to; not to mention a hugely partisan crowd. I just hope if they're not going to produce anything new, they don't keep touring and turn into a cabaret act. Glad as I am that they reformed and I got chances to see them again in the last couple of years, there's only so many times I can listen to the same set.
décembre 2009 -
BigSoftPunch I am still really psyched over this, it's when you leave something like this that you really miss it even fucking butlins
décembre 2009 -
lordwomble Hey if any of those idiots with the djembes and guitar pedals from M15 are on here, could you give me a link to your band I'd really appreciate it. If that noise which kept me up all night Sunday was anything to go by then you guys are really onto something special
décembre 2009 -
hamishwright i really wanted to like Primal Scream but they were a shambles. Caught YLT from 'Autumn Sweater' on and didn't regret it for a second...
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts MBV were great on sunday (though unfortunately I was so "zombified" I had to sit down for the second half of the set) and shite on friday. You do expect some element of professionalism having basically come all the way to Somerset to see them
décembre 2009 -
chaileywatts The whole point as i see it is that the vocals and music are kind of almost as one, especially for Loveless material. Ace weekend. Good company (apart from that cock in a poncho on the wanker quiz team- if this is you, sort it out), good music (though major disappointment from a Sonic Youth set that was too polished and too heavy on the melodics though thumbs up for Hey Joni, Eric's Trip and DV '69) Nothing could beat the secret gig they played at the Scala earlier in the year anyway though. Wish I'd seen YLT instead of Primal Scream but I was drunk and it was an ill informed choice. No Age were fucking rubbish imo. Membranes AMAZING. Lightning Bolt AGAIN as TBC? Leave it out ATP... Anyone see the SY Soft Focus thing. Really wanted to see that. I would be appalled if I didn't have a shower!!! Bath's are fucked... P.S. My boyfriend is yet to win me a cuddly toy...
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery i must admit i find it weird that they can get it so wrong at times considering how many times theyve trundled this set out now. I mean...I can't think of any other bands that accidentally cut a verse short by a bar or whatever...I reckon they must be pretty tense up there.
décembre 2009 -
lckyby "er, for My Bloody Valentine? Would go a bit against their whole style, no?" Maybe it was where I was standing, but at some points on Saturday they may as well have not been singing. Sunday was better, but I was at the front on Sunday.
décembre 2009 -
StreetUrchin I spent about two hours on Saturday looking for some form of shower substitute in Minehead. .Eventually returned with a plastic jug!
décembre 2009 -
hamishwright MBV weren't a patch on the Roundhouse shows. Sound not nearly as good - I never felt 'Realise' in the guts. And the tight stage meant their projection show mainly played on the roof. Friday was poor and Kevin clearly unhappy with the mix. Some blistering highlights on Saturday ('Soon' was immense) but again, Kevin very bad tempered - storming off after 'Realise'. Best name in the Sunday pub quiz was 'Cheer up Kevin Shields'. They got it together slightly on Sunday although totally screwed up the start of 'Feed Me With Your Kisses'... Kevin's solos weren't so wonky. Still the best thing about the weekend by far though...
décembre 2009 -
mrdanielsir Yeahh, my near deafness made ear plugs not so necessary. A few gems in the Sonic Youth set, otherwise was a little dissapointed in their choice, but it was still an incredible show. Best of the weekend along with Buzzcocks and MBV. Ariel Pink...dont know what the hell happened there really. Maybe i was too gone to enjoy it fully. Lightning Bolt were pretty extreme sat night, ended up on stage with them somehow filming them from behind, really not sure how that happened. Yo La Tengo were unexpectedly awesome, J Mascis was good stuff too. I had shower confusion as well, it led to a 'Very Helpful Person' called Ted coming round only to be told id fixed it in the last 5 minutes.
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery Yeah I thought Membranes were brilliant. So much energy.
décembre 2009 -
was_i_there Great weekend. Almost killed me tho! My Bloody Valentine were amazing as usual. The Friday night delays were very annoying and it took them a few songs to get things sorted, Sunday was much better. I thought it was as loud if not louder as the previous times I've seen them, though I guess it depends where you were standing, near the front was extremely loud but when I moved further back to the second level bit there were no need for earplugs. Sonic youth were great but didn't like the set list. Dirty Three was also incredible. Special mention to The Membranes who were a total surprise and one of my highlights and John Rob was a really nice guy.
décembre 2009 -
NomadicRevery There were loads more mistakes on the Friday show. They were like a bad pub band covering MBV. Their body language showed they weren't working well together either and the whole thing was just a downer. Everyone I spoke to, either from the audience or bands thought the same thing. Again, they're normally much louder than that too- I can see how people could've got away without earplugs.
décembre 2009 -
mankymusic to be fair I think most people *were* completely zombified by sunday night, I know I was
