The idea is simple: eight bands play across two stages in the same venue - four chosen by local DIY promoters Forest of Sound, four chosen by fantastic local independent label Gizeh Records. All bands play consecutively so the audience gets to see everything!

Saturday September 27th 2008

The Packhorse, 208 Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, LS2 9DX.

Doors 6pm. £6 advance / £7 on the door. Tickets available from We Got Tickets.

Acts playing are:

Rothko
Hailing from London, Rothko began way back in 1998 and have over the years produced some wonderful records on numerous labels including Trace and the French Bip Hop imprint. A career highlight is certainly the split recording with ambient pioneer Susumu Yokoto. Much of Rothko’s music is piano and guitar-led with swells of ambience and field recordings underneath. This is their first Leeds show in a long long time.

The Boats
Andrew R Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall (formerly of legends Hood and The Remote Viewer) reside in Burnley, where they spend their time producing amazingly delicate pieces of organic electronic music. The results are astounding and manage to combine all the heart of traditional folk songwriting, the beauty of fuzzy ambient soundscapes and the feel of expertly crafted electronica. Catch them on a rare-as-hen’s-teeth live show!

Glissando
This is the Leeds date on Glissando’s UK tour. Usually a duo but for this tour a 4 piece, expect haunting vocals shimmering melodies along the lines of Low, Rachel’s and Cocteau Twins. The new members have added a new depth to the sound and you may well get lost along the way. New album ‘With Our Arms Wide Open We March Towards the Burning Sea’ is out now on Gizeh.

Pan Am Scan
Formed over the geographic divide between Berlin and London, Pan Am Scan create minimalist soundscapes from vibraphones and live electronics, delicately layered and finding the perfect balance between Steve Reich-esque melodies and slow motion fractured electronica beats and clicks. Gorgeous stuff.

Sleepingdog
New Gizeh signing Sleepingdog is the project of Belgian-based musician Chantal Acda. Her ‘Polar Life’ album was constructed with the help of Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid) and previous tours with the likes of Iron and Wine and Lambchop give some indication of where Chantal’s music lies. Comparisons to Hanne Huckleberg and Joanna Newsom are somewhere near true and Chantal easily hold her own in this company with her beautiful and rich vocals, occompanied by just a piano or a guitar.

Winter North Atlantic
Also known as Ed Carter of Sheffield, Winter North Atlantic is a man caught somewhere between the hypnotic brilliance of the best instrumental hip-hop, the pure emotion and widescreen landscapes of Labradford and Mice Parade’s classical guitar heart. Luckily for us, this confusion produces a heady brew of haunting melodies, beautifully finger picked guitars and finely crafted beats, and is quite simply brilliant.

Spokes
Manchester’s Spokes will provide this fine evening with mostly instrumental, always captivating post-rock aceness. This is not your average quiet-loud band, they play with an edge of longing and sadness rarely seen in this genre and their ‘People Like You Like You’ album is indeed a fine piece of work that comes highly recommended. Recent slots at the Big Chill and Rockness festivals prove these lovely peeps are on the march.

Phantom Dog Beneath the Moon
Subtle flecks of noise and gorgeous cello cover tender singer/songwriter compositions in a blanket of noise, ambience and wonderful static in the world of Phantom Dog Beneath the Moon. Supremely crafted music.
