I drifted out of NMA's orbit in the late 1990s. No reason. Stuff just happened, though the early singles, No Rest and Impurity never stopped playing in a sticky corner of my unswept mind. Joolz's books and Ed Alleyn Johnson's first album too. Saw 'em at the Astoria and suddenly Justin Sullivan's whole restless, romantic, complicatedly English rock 'n' roll spirit made perfect sense again. Twenty-odd years and no nearer home - I don't know what it is that this band and I are saying to each each other, but it still feels like it means something personal and important...

the astoria rules. just a shame this will probably be my last gig there. it's central london, it's near the cro-bar, i always get a drink quickly, i can get down the front easily if i want, i can always see what's going on from the back or sides, and it's got a good atmosphere most of the time. the end of a legend, all thanks to a bloody train station that's not needed!
