With a reputation that spans more than three decades, The Hilliard Ensemble is considered one of the world’s most outstanding vocal chamber groups. Possessing a sound that evokes a tranquility that calms and soothes souls, and so unique that they can « be recognized within a single bar ».

In this two-part concert, audiences will be treated to two distinct musical experiences. The Ensemble first performs the works of internationally renowned award-winning Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, interspersed with medieval vocal music. Then comes Morimur, an « adventure in speculative musicology » that explores the hidden link between Bach’s chorales and his Violin Partita no. 2 in D Minor, with Muriel Cantoreggi on violin. Both parts of the concert feature German soprano Monika Mauch.

The Hilliard Ensemble was founded in 1974 by four London-based singers who enjoy singing « one to a part », meaning one solo voice to each part. Named after the English miniaturist painter Nicholas Hilliard (1547–1619), the ensemble comprises countertenor David James, tenor Steven Harrold and baritone Gordon Jones, who together bring a rare virtuosity to the works of the Medieval and Renaissance periods for which they are known, as well as specially commissioned contemporary music works. Over the past decade, they have also become renowned for their renditions of songs from the Baltic region.

This is The Hilliard Ensemble’s first concert in Singapore and their only stop in Asia. Expect a heart-stirring experience infused with a contrasting gravitas and lightness that is the hallmark of the Ensemble.
