Door Times : 8pm

KEIJI HAINO’s 30-year career has encompassed a dizzying range of approaches from wild, guitar-led ensemble rock and near-Neolithic drumming; live electronics, untutored explorations of lute and flute, to voice experiments and extended performances for gamelan and other percussion. He has also collaborated widely with the likes of Derek Bailey, Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke and Tony Conrad. Throughout, Haino has retained a visionary focus upon temporary suspension through noise (and silence) whilst refining a mercurial, highly distinctive method and an arrestingly dramatic on-stage presence that borrows the raiments of performance art.

For this new Cafe Oto residency Keiji Haino will play guitar in collaboration with drummer Steve Noble (Tuesday 28th Feb), before playing an exceedingly rare UK solo vocal performance (Wednesday 29th Feb).

Active since the late 60s, PHIL MINTON is perhaps the pre-eminent contemporary experimental vocal improviser, darting mesmerizingly and improbably between spasmodic, gibbering, choking eruptions and feral, wordless, song-like passages of great tenderness and beauty. Like Heather, the surface turbulence and challenge of his performances quickly makes way for an astonishingly direct emotional experience.

The best indication of whether it'll sell out is to check the ticket links above, as they tell you how many are left. Right now there's only 20-ish left per day/30 for both days so they could be gone in the next week if they're not holding any back. If you email the venue/promoters they could probably tell you if they expect to be selling on the door. Since wegottickets don't actually post anything out & let you reallocate to a different name you could always borrow a friend's card & pay them back?

Haino/Noble duo looks promising. I was hoping he would be involved. Would have been even better with O'Malley on bass, though. Supports aren't bad I guess...
