Arguably one of the most exciting double-bills to hit Thebarton Theatre in many years, Portishead and Mercury Rev have announced a special Adelaide gig together while in the country for the Harvest festival in the eastern states. While the bands are separated by both the Atlantic and music styles, their pairing for a Thebarton Theatre show will be a sublime event.

Last here to promote their eponymous 1997 album, Bristol’s Portishead remain an iconic act on the UK dance scene. The downtempo melodies of their 1994 debut Dummy combined with vocalist Beth Gibbons’ sorrowful vocals saw them grouped with fellow Bristol artists Massive Attack and Tricky as the leaders of the trip hop movement, however they broke free of expectations and genre limitations via their live recording with the New York Philharmonic, Roseland NYC Live, and the darkly edged Third from 2008.

Tying in with the deluxe re-release of their breakthrough 1998 album Deserter’s Songs, Mercury Rev return nine years since their Adelaide gig at Heaven last showcased their musical beauty. The New York-based musicians’ deft indie rock sounds blend the pastoral with the cinematic, ensuring their Thebarton Theatre crowd will be buzzing like fireflies in a bottle.
