Optimistic hooks, gleaming choruses, anthemic pop and intimate, bruised fragments: all part of what fans adore about British indie-folk popsmiths NOAH AND THE WHALE. Secret Sounds is proud to announce sideshows of the charismatic Londoners, who’ll head down under in July off the back of their acclaimed new release, Last Night on Earth.
Three records in, NOAH AND THE WHALE – led by irrepressible frontman/songwriter Charlie Fink – have carved themselves an enviable niche in the Brit music scene. First coming of age with the joyful, new folk abandon of 2008’s Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, Fink delivered a lovelorn blow with the heart-on-his-sleeve, break-up inspired The First Days of Spring (2009).
Determined to challenge himself even further, for the quartet’s next effort Fink looked to Lou Reed’s Berlin, the paintings of Edward Hopper, Tom Wait’s Bone Machine and odes by Bukowski for storytelling inspiration. Last Night on Earth (released in March via Cooperative) is NOAH AND THE WHALE’s most dynamic listen yet. Recorded in Los Angeles and co-produced by Jason Lader (Julian Casablancas, The Mars Volta), Charlie’s “people songs” possess a nostalgic, adventurous, and triumphant vibrancy – just listen to opener “Life is Life”, “Waiting For My Chance to Come”, or first single “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N”.
Currently playing sold-out shows throughout the UK before heading to the US next month, NOAH AND THE WHALE can’t wait to hit our shores. “I’m so excited about coming back to Australia, you have no idea!” Charlie insists cheerfully. So are we, Charlie, so are we!
