‘Loneliness is a Dirty Mattress’ is essentially a showcase for Kitchen’s Floor’s development from a downer folk experiment to the confused, disconsolate voice of Brisbane inner city youth. A lot of these tunes sound like Nirvana songs cut in half and filtered through a No Wave sieve, and with the kind of sound quality that would suggest they were recorded in a sharehouse dunny. There is a deadpan monotony to the vocals and very little attempt is made toward hitting vocal melodies. The effect is similar to the Fall’s Mark E. Smith, with the same sardonic wit, albeit a lot less caustic and self conscious. Matt Kennedy the singer, I know the guy and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without a beer in his hand, which is reflected in the music. The title of this record refers to either masturbation or suburban isolation, and I think that is far more indicative of what this record sounds like than any musical references I can make. This is the sound of sitting around in your house with a head full of Prozac and a dvd in the DVD player, wanting to leave and do something but sick of going to the same places and seeing the same people that you do every day; then eventually going out and having an alright time but spending more money than you can afford and going home and jerking off. It’s the sound of falling in and out of contentment with your everyday life depending on how much alcohol is running through your bloodstream. It’s about trying to make shit shine, and eventually accepting that it won’t.

I’m not sure whether Matt would agree with this assessment, and I think that the Kitchen’s Floor interview in this issue will provide a better understanding of what this record sounds and feels like, and the intent behind it. However, I will say that on face value ‘Loneliness…’ is more representative of Brisbane, 2009 than any other released this year, as familiar as the dew that runs down the side of a XXXX stubby; and one of the best, most catchy and honest local releases in recent memory.
